Plant growth-promoting activities and genomic analysis of the stress-resistant Bacillus megaterium STB1, a bacterium of agricultural and biotechnological interest

Abstract: HighlightsB. megaterium STB1 is a stress-tolerant plant-growth-promoting bacterium.Tomato inoculated with strain STB1 presented resistance to salt stress.Genomic analysis revealed the basis for STB1 plant-growth-promoting abilities.Strain STB1 presents great potential for agriculture and biotechnology.

“…Polyamines (PA) have been also correlated with lateral root, ethylene modulation and oxidative stress alleviation 21,64 . Considering the role of spermidine in bacteria biofilm formation 65 , genes involved in PA pathways may constitute an additional mechanism related to PGP properties, as suggested in Serratia marcescens 21 or Bacillus megaterium STB1 66 . The majority of the selected PGPR possessed PA-related genes, except for SAVSo04 whose genome contained the ipdc gene.…”

“…According to El-Komy, (2005), wheat inoculated with B. megaterium exhibited higher shoot dry weight, total nitrogen yield and phosphate contents. Studies by Nascimento et al (2020) and Wu et al (2019) show B. megaterium possess genetic elements that play a role in xenobiotic degradation, stress resistance, pathogen antagonistic activities, and other soil rhizosphere colonization traits. Five isolates were closely related to B. simplex, a bacterium species reported by Schwartz et al (2013) to modify the architecture of the roots by enhancing the formation of more lateral roots in pea plants.…”
