Abstract. Relationships between plant form, plant function, and environmental factors are analyzed in order to test the efficiency of growth form attributes and phenomorphology for studying vegetation on a regional scale. Examples of sclerophyllous evergreen coppices with Quercus ilex in the mediterranean climate of southern France are examined. The results for three growth form attributes (renewal bud location, leaf consistency, leaf size) and some environmental factors show that these criteria are efficient along a gradient of increasing stress. Concerning phenomorphology, some trends along the main environmental gradient become evident, but these results should be confirmed with descriptions of more species. It is suggested that man's ancient, very strong influence upon these ecosystems could explain some results showing that growth form distribution does not fit the pattern of variation in environmental factors.

Monocharacter growth fonn types were determined for slected plant communities in Chile along an altitudinal gradient, and in Israel and South Africa along an aridity gradient. More than 60o/o of the species of the plant communities examined are evergreen. Summer deciduous plants are a common feature in ali the sites examined. The percentage of plants shedding ail their leaves in summer vary considerably.Sclerophyily dominates only the temperate mediterranean plant communities examined. Malacophylly is a distinct feature in ail other sites with a considerable percentage of evcrgreen malacophyllous plants.Leaf succulents are found only in the more arid sites of South Africa and Israel and are absent in Chile.Résumé.-L'étude des formes de croissance, à l'aide de monocaractères, est réalisée le long d'un transect altitudinal au Chili ainsi que dans les zones les moins et les plus pluvieuses d'Israël et d'Afrique du Sud.La persistance du feuillage apparaît comme étant le caractère dominant dans les régions étudiées indépendamment de l'altitude et de la pluviosité.Les types méditerranéens de végétation ne sont pas toujours à prédominance de sclérophylles. Un pourcentage considérable de ces espèces sont malacophylles dans les habitats les plus humides et portent des feuilles succulentes dans les habitats les plus arides.La durée de vie des feuilles de la plupart des espèces des sites étudiés n'excèdent que de peu une année.

“…Les chaméphytes sont également bien représentés avec 24 espèces (29%) car ils peuvent développer diverses formes d'adaptation à la sécheresse, se traduisant par la réduction de la surface foliaire et par le développement d'un puissant système racinaire. Les chaméphytes seraient bien adaptés au phénomène d'aridisation (Orshan et al, 1984 ;Floret et al, 1990). Le pâturage semble ainsi favoriser de manière globale les chaméphytes faiblement appétants (Astragalus armatus, Atractylis serratuloides, Anabasis articulata).…”
