Plant growth and survival of five introduced and two native/naturalized perennial grass genotypes exposed to two defoliation managements in arid Argentina

Abstract: The field performance of the native Pappophorum vaginatum, the naturalized Eragrostis curvula and various cultivars of the introduced Achnatherum hymenoides and Leymus cinereus was evaluated as potential forage resources in rangelands of arid Argentina during the warm seasons of 2007/2008 and 2008/2009. Plants of these grass species, obtained from seeds, were transplanted to the field in 2006, when they were 1 year old. During the study years, there were two defoliation managements: plants of all study genotyp… Show more

“…This helps to explain the low ANPP of the WSPG in most disturbance types and study years. The introduction of WSPG which are a food constraint for grazing cattle and sheep constitutes an unsolved, critical challenge to date in arid, northeastern rangelands of Patagonia (Torres et al, 2013). The great contribution of CSAG to total ANPP in the Old Field 1 and Overgrazing disturbance types is coincident with the state-and-transition model reported by Distel and Bóo (1996).…”

“…This was because it was compacted as a result of previous studies. 39,40 With the purpose of having a loose soil, weed control and soil aeration, tillage was conducted twice. In addition, the soil was further cleaned twice with a rake, and also twice using a cultivator.…”
