Plant Growth and Microbiota Structural Effects of Rhizobacteria Inoculation on Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla King [Meliaceae]) under Nursery Conditions

Restoring forests in areas where they once stood is an important step towards increasing carbon sequestration. However, reforestation requires an increase in current levels of seedling production in the tree nurseries. The purpose of this work was to study the effectiveness of preparations based on bacteria and humic substances (HSs) to stimulate the growth of tree seedlings in a nursery. Two selected strains of Pseudomonas and humic substances were used to treat pine and poplar plants. The treatment of seedlings was carried out during their transplantation and after it, and the effects of treatment on shoot elongation, shoot and root mass were evaluated. Treatments with both bacterial strains enhanced the growth of poplar and pine shoots and roots, which was explained by their ability to synthesize auxins. P. protegens DA1.2 proved to be more effective than P. sp. 4CH. The treatment of plants with humic substances increased the nitrogen balance index and the content of chlorophyll in the leaves of poplar seedlings, which can elevate carbon storage due to the higher rate of photosynthesis. In addition, the combination of humic substances with P. protegens DA1.2 increased shoot biomass accumulation in newly transplanted pine plants, which indicates the possibility of using this combination in plant transplantation. The increase in length and weight of shoots and roots serves as an indicator of the improvement in the quality of planting material, which is necessary for successful reforestation to increase capture of carbon dioxide.

Although the evolution of principles, procedures, and predictive abilities related to seedling quality throughout the plant production chain (i.e., from seeds to sustainable plantations) has been reviewed over the past decades in various technical and scientific publications, there is still a need to develop and integrate new and efficient practices in forest nurseries and at planting sites, in order to improve the morphophysiological quality of seedlings and saplings, and their survival and growth under different site and environmental conditions in the context of climate change. We have grouped together different scientific articles in this Special Issue of Forests, entitled “Production in Forest Nurseries and Field Performance of Seedlings”. They cover different topics relating to the seedling production chain in different countries and continents, from growing media to planting performance related to reforestation, restoration, and agroforestry programs.

O uso de efluentes de fossas sépticas biodigestoras é uma alternativa para produção de mudas de forma sustentável de Khaya senegalensis A. Juss, espécie que possui características que agregam valor comercial à madeira, além de fornecer uma gama de produtos madeireiros e não-madeireiros. Objetivou-se avaliar o crescimento de mudas de Khaya senegalensis A. Juss com a aplicação de doses crescentes de efluente: 0, 25, 50, 75 e 100% e com inoculação de gênero Bacillus subtilis isolado A6. O substrato utilizado foi terra de subsolo, areia e substrato comercial Bioflora na proporção 1:1:1 em tubetes (capacidade: 290 cm³), o delineamento estatístico foi em blocos inteiramente casualizados no esquema fatorial 5x2 (5 doses de efluente e duas condições de inoculação, com e sem inoculação). Após 90 dias foram avaliadas as seguintes variáveis: diâmetro do caule, altura, número de folhas e avaliações das variáveis fotossintéticas: assimilação de CO2, condutância estomática, transpiração e eficiência instantânea de carboxilação. Foram avaliadas massa seca das folhas (MSF), da raiz (MSR), do caule (MSC) e total (MST), entretanto, não sucedeu diferença significativa no crescimento das mudas com inoculação, exceto para a massa seca da folha. Os melhores resultados foram observados ao utilizar a aplicação de efluente a 100% a cada 7 dias. As mudas com inoculação de Bacillus subtilis isolado A6 e irrigada com 100% da dose do efluente apresentaram maior massa secas foliar, indicando, assim, a combinação destas bactérias com o efluente como bioestimulantes no crescimento da parte aérea das plantas.
