Chemoprevention could play important role in the management of Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). HCC develop in pre-neoplastic organ, the cirrhotic liver. The study aimed at evaluating the efficacy of Hibiscus sabdariffa L. water extract containing anthocyanins and Nanoselenium (nSe) as chemo-protective substances on HCC induced by Diethylnitrosamine (DEN). Thioacetamide (TAA) which causes liver cirrhosis was used as initiator. The oxidative stress marker malondialdehyde (MDA) level for lipid peroxidation, liver antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities as well as reduced glutathione (GSH) content were measured, in addition, to Alpha fetoprotein (AFP), tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) and caspase-3 levels. Treatment by H. sabdariffa extract significantly increase caspase-3 activity and decrease both TNF-α and AFP levels; significantly decrease the oxidative stress marker MDA level and increase the level of antioxidant markers SOD, CAT and GSH. The plant extract showed a remarkable effect as selenium which is known by its significant antioxidant effect. The findings were well depicted histopathologically. It can be concluded that HEx containing anthocyanin pigments and nSe can act strongly as chemo-protective substances against HCC, possibly by increasing apoptotic mechanism and antioxidant scavenger levels.

Background: Human health hazard due to exposure to chemical pollutants is a global and chronic problem. The pesticides constitute the primary toxic chemicals in the environment. The present study explored the effects of grape seed oil supplementation on diazinon (DZN) induced chromosomal aberrations and sperm abnormalities in male mice. Materials and methods: The tests were carried out on 35 adult male albino mice (16-20 weeks, weighed 30-35 g). Animals were categorized into seven groups each with five mice; the first group was treated with phos¬phate buffer saline (PBS) as negative control group. The second and third groups were treated daily and orally with two different doses of the DZN (60 and 90 mg/kg body weight) respectively dissolved in corn oil. Animals of fourth, fifth and sixth groups were orally administered grape seed oil at a dose of 2 g/kg body weight, after 6 hours the fourth and fifth groups subjected to DZN at the same dose given to second and third groups. Animals of the seventh group were supplied with corn oil. The treatments were continued for five weeks. Results: The results showed that DZN increased the frequency of both chromatid and chromosome aberrations in bone marrow cells and sperm abnormalities. Treatment with grape seed oil extract showed a significant decrease (P<0.01) on both total abnormal chromosomes and sperms, and there was no significant difference between these groups and negative control in most analyzed parameters. The dose of grape seed oil has significantly minimized the effect of first dose of DZN concerning chromosome structure while it worked in the second dose regarding sperm abnormalities. Conclusions: This finding suggests the protective action of grape seed oil against DZN induced clastogenecity and sperm abnormalities.

Recently, plant protein as a necessary nutrient source for human beings, a common ingredient of traditional processed food, and an important element of new functional food has gained prominence due to the increasing demand for healthy food. Walnut protein (WP) is obtained from walnut kernels and walnut oil-pressing waste and has better nutritional, functional, and essential amino acids in comparison with other vegetable and grain proteins. WP can be conveniently obtained by various extraction techniques, including alkali-soluble acid precipitation, salting-out, and ultrasonic-assisted extraction, among others. The functional properties of WP can be modified for desired purposes by using some novel methods, including free radical oxidation, enzymatic modification, high hydrostatic pressure, etc. Moreover, walnut peptides play an important biological role both in vitro and in vivo. The main activities of the walnut peptides are antihypertensive, antioxidant, learning improvement, and anticancer, among others. Furthermore, WP could be applied in the development of functional foods or dietary supplements, such as delivery systems and food additives, among others. This review summarizes recent knowledge on the nutritional, functional, and bioactive peptide aspects of WP and possible future products, providing a theoretical reference for the utilization and development of oil crop waste.
