Plant diseases reduce crop yield and quality, hampering the development of agriculture. Fungicides, which restrict chemical synthesis, are the strongest controls for plant diseases. However, the harmful effects on the environment due to continued and uncontrolled utilization of fungicides has become a major challenge in recent years. Plant-sourced fungicides are a class of plant antibacterial substances or compounds that induce plant defenses. They can kill or inhibit the growth of target pathogens efficiently with no or low toxicity, degrade readily, do not prompt development of resistance, which has led to their widespread use. In this study, the growth inhibition effect of 24 plant-sourced ethanol extracts on rice sprigs was studied. Ethanol extract of gallnuts and cloves inhibited the growth of rice sprites by up to 100%. Indoor toxicity measurement results showed that the gallnut and glove constituents inhibition reached 39.23 μg/mL and 18.82 μg/mL, respectively. Extract treated rice sprigs were dry and wrinkled. Gallnut caused intracellular swelling and breakage of mitochondria , disintegration of nuclei, aggregation of protoplasts, and complete degradation of organelles in hyphae and aggregation of cellular contents. Protection of Rhizoctonia solani viability reached 46.8% for gallnut and 37.88% for clove in water emulsions of 1,000 μg/mL gallnut and clove in the presence of 0.1% Tween 80. The protection by gallnut was significantly stronger than that of clove. The data could inform the choice of plant-sourced fungicides for the comprehensive treatment of rice sprig disease. The studied extract effectively protected rice sprigs and could be a suitable alternative to commercially available chemical fungicides. Further optimized field trials are needed to effectively sterilize rice paddies.

The increase in demand for agricultural produce necessitates the continuous search for affordable, ecofriendly, readily available crop protectors, and food preservatives. Historically, the use of various chemicals was employed in controlling plant diseases and to maintain food quality. In the past few decades, several natural product-based alternatives have been discovered and projected as better alternatives to synthetic pesticides and other synthetic agrochemicals. Recent studies focusing on the application of different botanicals in crop protection and food preservation were carefully selected and reviewed. The application of plant extract in the biogenic preparation of nanoparticles was also reviewed. This review confirms that several natural products can be used as a safe replacement for synthetic agrochemicals. Different plant extracts have also served as feed for the synthesis of nanoparticle, which is increasingly applicable in crop protection and food preservation.

Background: Blast is a devastating disease in rice production. The current research tested the efficacy of biologicals and fungicides against blast. Aqueous extracts of Azadirachta indica, Ocimum basalicum, Cymbopogan flexousus, Thymus vulgaris, Aloe vera, Tagetes patula, Cordia curassavica, Aegle marmelos, Allium fistulosum, Syzygium aromaticum, and Calotropis gigantea were tested in vitro at 5, 10, and 15% concentrations against Magnaporthe oryzae. Also, two isolates, Bacillus cereus OG2L and B. subtilis OG2A, and one isolate, Azotobacter SAG19, and, similarly, five new generation fungicides were evaluated at three different doses against blast pathogen M. oryzae in vitro. The treatments that exhibited the best performance in vitro were further evaluated against blast disease under field conditions.Results: Extracts of T. patula (5%), C. gigantea (5%), C. curassavica (10%), A. fistulosum (10%), and A. marmelos (15%) showed greater than 81% inhibition to M. oryzae in vitro. Likewise, all three biocontrol agents, viz. B. cereus OG2L, B. subtilis OG2A, and Azotobacter SAG19, demonstrated more than 50% inhibition of mycelial growth of pathogen in vitro, and the commercial formulations of fungicides Propineb, Trifloxystrobin+Tebuconazole, Tebuconazol+Triadimenol, Bacillus subtilis Strain QST 713, and Cinnamon Oil 8%+Clove Oil 2% also significantly inhibited M. oryzae. Under field conditions, C. curassavica (10%), A. marmelos (15%), C. gigantea (5%); B.cereus OG2L; B.subtilis OG2A; Proineb and Trifloxystrobin+Tebuconazole were effective in reducing disease in addition to yield enhancement.Conclusion: Overall, the plant extracts (C. curassavica at 10%, A. marmelos at 15%, C. gigantea at 5%); bio-agents (B. cereus OG2L, B. subtilis OG2A both at 2g/l), and new generation fungicides Antracol 70WP (Proineb) at 2.5 g/l and Nativo 75 WG (Trifloxystrobin+Tebuconazole) at 0.5 g/l provided effective control against blast disease and superior plant growth and yield compared with other treatments and untreated control.
