Plant community analysis along environmental gradients in moist afromontane forest of Gerba Dima, South-western Ethiopia

Abstract: Background This study was carried out in Gerba Dima Forest, South-Western Ethiopia, to determine the floristic composition, species diversity and community types along environmental gradients. Identifying and interpreting the structure of species assemblages is the main goal of plant community ecology. Investigation of forest community composition and structure is very useful in understanding the status of tree population, regeneration, and diversity for conservation purposes. … Show more

“…4 ) this agrees with Tekle and Maryo [ 18 ] that show that human influences, such as grazing, decreased significantly as altitude increased. Similar research findings in Ethiopian Afromontane forests confirmed the importance of altitude as a major determinant of vegetation distribution along altitudinal gradients [ 12 , 19 , 57 ]. According to Lenoir, et al [ 58 ], changes in species distribution are associated with altitudinal range.…”

“…Gebeyehu, et al [ 59 ] also show the grazing effect on plant composition in the Awi zone in Northwest Ethiopia. Dibaba andSoromessa [ 19 ], and Bussmann [ 60 ] assured that disturbance affects plant community distribution by impeding natural regeneration and seedling establishment in tropical forests. And in general, altitude, aspect, slope, and grazing have a significant effect (Table 7 ) on the study area’s forest patch composition and community formation and this is also supported by other studies [ 11 14 ].…”

“…The investigation of the vegetation ecological status in the Chengcun Bay surrounding areas was carried out by the technical route of combining a shoreline survey with a quadrat survey [ 20 ]. According to the topography, accessibility and vegetation distribution of the project area, the survey shorelines and survey areas were determined ( Figure 2 ).…”

“…The identification and analysis of species assemblages is the primary goal of plant community ecology (Dibaba, Soromessa, & Warkineh, 2022;Omijeh, 2020). In an effort to give a structural description of vegetation, Dansereau (1951) developed the structural approach to vegetation studies that leads to numerous researches on vegetation's structure changes with time.…”
