Plant Cells under Attack: Unconventional Endomembrane Trafficking during Plant Defense

Abstract: Since plants lack specialized immune cells, each cell has to defend itself independently against a plethora of different pathogens. Therefore, successful plant defense strongly relies on precise and efficient regulation of intracellular processes in every single cell. Smooth trafficking within the plant endomembrane is a prerequisite for a diverse set of immune responses. Pathogen recognition, signaling into the nucleus, cell wall enforcement, secretion of antimicrobial proteins and compounds, as well as gener… Show more

“…The total amount of pectins (CDTA and Na 2 CO 3 extracted polysaccharides) increased upon the Pph inoculation ( Figure 5 ). Indeed, the higher HG methylation degree observed, as revealed by immunolabeling in these fractions ( Figure 8 ), would suggest a HG synthesis increase after the infection, as HG methyl-esterification only occurs in Golgi apparatus [ 77 , 78 , 79 ], and/or a decrease of pectin methyl esterase activity after the Pph infection, as this is altered in other pathosystems [ 27 , 80 ]. Besides, the Ara and Xyl variation in the KII fraction suggest an increment of AX in tightly cross-linked hemicelluloses.…”

“…Endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-bodies accumulate defense proteins (Chuberre et al, 2018 ) and the ER is now recognizably a hub to sort proteins to plastids and mitochondria (Bellucci et al, 2018 ). Activation of endomembrane trafficking associated to an increase in salicylic acid levels during plant defense has also been reported (Ruano and Scheuring, 2020 ). Although appealing, this hypothesis clearly requires further experimental evidence.…”

“…Rhi-milR-13 regulates Osa-vacuolar-sorting receptor (VSR) of rice which is responsible for targeting defense-related soluble proteins to the vacuole. Plant vacuoles play an important role in defense by releasing hydrolytic enzymes and antimicrobial compounds upon pathogen infection that leads to programmed cell death due to hypersensitive response [ 48 ]. Suppression of rice VSR by R. solani milRNA might suppress the plant defense by inhibiting the hypersensitive response.…”
