Plant cell culture extract of Cirsium eriophorum with skin pore refiner activity by modulating sebum production and inflammatory response

Abstract: Facial pore enlargement is considered a significant esthetic and health concern in skincare cosmetics. The pores fulfill the critical function of keeping the skin surface hydrated and protected against microbial infections. The hyperseborrhea, the stress factors, and the hormonal triggers can cause pore size enlargement, causing higher susceptibility of the skin to microbe aggressions and inflammatory reactions. Thus, reducing excessive sebum production and keeping functional pores are two of the most requeste… Show more

“…5). It is thought that the problems with pores are caused by an increase in sebum amount, an increase in hole volume due to clogging of keratin plugs, and a decrease in elasticity around the pores (Laneri et al , 2021). In our study, it appears that the improvement in pore issues was not caused by repairing the skin structure and improving elasticity around pores by collagen production (Schütz et al ., 2019), but by promoting turnover by improving TEWL.…”

“…Zinc has been reported to reduce sebum production in vivo and to inhibit SRD5A via non-competitive inhibition of testosterone binding to SRD5A and the decreasing formation of the NADPH cofactor [ 13 ]. Many herbal extracts could alleviate androgen-stimulated sebum production from potent SRD5A inhibitor activity [ 44 , 52 , 53 ]. Moreover, saw palmetto, sesame seeds, and argan oil, which have high contents of polyphenolic compounds, have been introduced for use in facial sebum control [ 1 ].…”

“…In the previous study, excessive sebum levels, age, and the male gender affected facial pore size enlargement [ 56 ]. Facial pore sizes further play an important role in releasing sebum from sebaceous glands [ 52 ]. Androgen is predominantly exerted to the proliferation of sebocytes and sebum production [ 56 , 57 ].…”

Bioactive extracts are also obtained by algae, mushrooms, by-products of plant origins [ 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 ], and plant cell culture technology [ 15 , 16 ]. The latter is a natural and suitable technology used to make hair care, makeup, skincare, and supplement ingredients.…”
