Show more

“…Following Moura et al (2003) and Bacci et al (2008), in each test plot during the rice seedling stage, 30 seedlings were selected randomly along the diagonal transect in each tested plot, and 1 seedling was cut from the base and put into a plastic bag. In addition, 30 plants were also sampled at random along the diagonal transect in each test plot after the transplantation, and three young leaves along with a part of stem for each plant were cut and put carefully into a plastic bag.…”

“…Three sampling techniques were studied: leaf beating on white plastic tray (LBPT) (35 cm length × 30 cm width × 5 cm of depth), direct counting of insects (DC) on the abaxial leaf surface, and whole leaf collection (WLC). The sampling units consisted of taking a leaf from either the apical, median, or basal third of the plant canopy (Moura et al 2003).…”

“…The DC technique consisted of counting the insects on the abaxial surface of the leaf. In order to accomplish that, the leaf was turned carefully in a way to avoid disturbance of the insects; and the WLC technique consisted of bagging a single leaf followed by the detachment from the plants, and fi nally taking it to the laboratory for evaluation (Moura et al 2003). The time spent for taking each sample and moving from one sample to another was recorded and used to calculate the cost of sampling.…”

“…A sampling technique that allows quick and accurate estimates of the density of pest arthropod populations is critical in evaluating pest abundance against established economic thresholds. An effective sampling technique should consider precision, cost effectiveness, and pest distribution patterns, both within and between plants (Pedigo 1988;Maura et al 2003).…”
