Nontarget impacts of six transgenic Bt rice lines (expressing the Cry1Ab or Cry1Ab/ Cry1Ac protein) on the thrips, Stenchaetothrips biformis (Bagnall), attacking the rice seedling and tillering stages, were evaluated under laboratory and Þeld conditions. Laboratory results showed relatively longer larval, pupal development and preoviposition durations of S. biformis. Although it had a shorter oviposition period, female adult longevity and less total laid eggs were found when fed on some tested Bt rice in comparison to non-Bt controls. S. biformis population dynamics in Bt and non-Bt plots were monitored using the plastic bag and beat plate methods. In the Þeld, the temporal patterns of S. biformis population changes were similar between tested Bt rice lines and their respective control; however, the total number of S. biformis individuals collected from the Bt plots were signiÞcantly less or the same, varying from variety to variety, compared with those from the non-Bt plots. ELISA results showed that the Bt insecticidal protein could be transferred from Bt rice to the thrips, and the concentrations of the protein in rice leaves and thrips were not signiÞcantly correlated with some important biological parameters of the thrip. In addition, the potential effects of Bt rice on the abundance of S. biformis candidate predators are also discussed. In conclusion, our results show that the six Bt rice lines assessed may be less preferable host plants to S. biformis at the individual and population levels in comparison to the non-Bt rice plants.

Neotropical Entomology 37(5): 582-590 (2008) Plano de Amostragem para Tripes (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) em Pepino RESUMO -Este trabalho determina a melhor técnica, unidade amostral e o número de amostras para compor um plano de amostragem para os tripes Frankliniella schultzei (Trybom) e Thrips palmi (Karny) em pepino. A efi cácia de três técnicas de amostragem: batida de folhas em bandeja plástica branca, contagem direta de insetos na face inferior das folhas e coleta de folhas em sacola plástica foi comparada em nove cultivos comerciais de pepino, empregando três unidades amostrais (uma folha de ramo localizado nos terços apical, mediano e basal do dossel da planta). Baseado na variância relativa e precisão econômica dos melhores sistemas amostrais (melhores técnicas e unidades amostrais), calculou-se o número de amostras para a composição do plano de amostragem convencional. O sistema mais adequado para a amostragem de F. schultzei em pepino foi a contagem direta de insetos em folha do terço apical do espaldeiramento. Para tanto, deve-se amostrar uma folha por planta em 38 plantas/lavoura. Para a amostragem de T. palmi, o melhor sistema foi a batida de folha do terço apical do espaldeiramento em bandeja plástica. Na amostragem conjunta das duas espécies, o sistema mais adequado foi a contagem direta dos insetos em folha do terço apical do espaldeiramento. Nesse caso, amostra-se uma folha por planta, em 35 plantas/ lavoura. Estes resultados facilitam a tomada de decisão no manejo de tripes em pepino, agregando os benefícios da decisão correta para adoção ou não de práticas de redução populacional. The number of samples was determined based on the relative variance and the economic precision for the best technique and sampling unit. The direct counting of insects on the apical third of the plant canopy was the best sampling technique for F. schultzei based on one leaf surveyed per plant using 38 plants per fi eld. The best sampling technique for T. palmi was the leaf beating on a tray using one leaf of the apical third per plant and 35 plants per fi eld. Studies on development of a sampling strategy for the complex species of leafhoppers, Asymmetrasca decedens (Paoli) and Empoasca decipiens Paoli within glabrous cotton Ç ukurova 1518 were done in Adana province, Turkey during 2003-2005. The nymphs showed aggregated distribution pattern, but adults regularly distributed on cotton plants with different ages. The leafhoppers were aggregated on the lower leaves of plants with 9 main stem node (MSN). As plants grew to 12 MSN, they typically moved upwards away from damaged lower leaves to less damaged leaves in the middle stratum. The best MSN leaf to sample nymphs or adults of the leafhoppers was the 8th from the apex, when plants had 9-15 MSN. The population density of leafhoppers strongly affected the numbers of leaf samples required. Numbers of samples needed to estimate the densities with 3, 5, and 10 nymphs per leaf sample at the 20% precision level in 0.3 ha area were 33, 12, and 3, respectively. Population densities of the leafhoppers were significantly lower in the early morning (0530-0700 or 0730-0800 h) than those found in other times of a day. This study suggests that leafhoppers could be sample in any time of a day after 0800 h, preferably 1800-1900 h, in June-July period in the Mediterranean region.
