As the result of an explosive growth in e‐tailing, telemarketing, and television home‐shopping industries, the demand for the direct shipment of purchased goods by express couriers has increased over the last several years. The success of an express courier service often depends heavily on the direct marketing firm's ability to extend its cutoff time (deadline) for direct home deliveries coordinated by service centers near customers. Such an extension of cutoff time, however, may prolong consolidation holding time at the consolidation terminal and subsequently disrupt the timely delivery of products to customers. To make a trade‐off between cutoff time extension and delivery delays, we propose an integer programming model and its genetic algorithm solution procedure that allows express couriers, such as UPS, FedEx, and DHL, to maximize their profit generated by direct home deliveries. To demonstrate the practicality and efficiency of the proposed model and solution procedure, we conducted a case study involving an express courier in Korea.

Locating and sizing park-ride lots with interactive computer graphs

Two alternative methods for conducting a preliminary analysis of the problem of locating and sizing park-ride lots for an urban bus transit system are examined. These alternative methods are tested using a large and complex street network representing the northern half of the City of Seattle, Washington. Four design criteria are identified and an overall measure of system performance is devised. The problem is to determine the size and location of three park-ride lots that will maximize the performance of the system. The first method utilizes a computing system called LOCATOR II in an interactive graphic mode. In an experimental setting, five students use LOCATOR II to locate three park-ride lots and their solutions are found to exhibit a very high average level of performance. The second method does not involve a direct interaction with the computing system but does use LOCATOR II in a batch mode. Several students participate in three rounds of the batch mode experiment and the performance of their designs is somewhat poorer than the designs found in the interactive graphics experiment. Overall, the experimental results show that relatively inexperienced persons can find a high performance design for a reasonably complex problem quickly and inexpensively. These designs can provide a good starting point for the detailed consideration of many of the other aspects of the problem of providing a high performance bus transit service in an urban area.

As express courier market expands rapidly, companies are exposed to fierce competition. To cope with struggle for their survival, they are continuously making efforts to improve their service system. Even if most of service centers are directly linked to a consolidation terminal in courier service network, some of them with regional disadvantages are operated in milk run type from/to the consolidation terminal, which is a traditional PDP (Pick-up and Delivery Problem). This study suggests an approach to solve the PDP with the objective of maximizing the incremental profit, which belongs to PTP (Profitable Tour Problem) class. After the PTP is converted to TSP (Traveling Salesman Problem) with the same objective, a heuristic algorithm based on GA (Genetic Algorithm) is developed and examined through an example problem in practice of a courier service company in Korea.
