The emergence of a networked society generates transformations in the dynamic interactions of people impacting cultural and service systems. A location can provide different individual and collective meanings, perceptions, and experiences to different people. However, it is unclear how urban actors can collect, measure, and operationalise such place-based knowledge. Thus, this work addresses the Social-Design Modes theme from the IASDR community, rethinking how urban actors can interpret place-based knowledge from a given community. This research evaluates the potential of an exploratory method involving photo-based storytelling to unpack key factors associated with a place. Geographic Information Systems support the approach in order to transfer complex subjective experiences into simple and unique geographical representations. We provide empirical evidence of how this method operationalises individual and collective place-based knowledge through two study cases. This method merges design with the 'social' to respond to pressing social questions by urban actors. The methodological implications encountered through this process may act as guidelines to inform practitioners in related fields and other areas of knowledge.

The article presents results about Geodesign studies of the Iron Quadrangle (Quadrilátero Ferrífero – QF) that are under development since 2016, based on economic, environmental, and social approaches, with the goal to promote cultural landscape planning based on shared process, giving support to collective and individual opinion making. This paper has the goal do present the Brazilian Geodesign platform, called “GISColab”, that was first tested in QF case study. The QF area is characterized by conflicts of interests due to mining activities, urban growth, cultural heritage landscapes and the presence of areas of environmental protection. QF is especially important as part of the economic structure of the state of Minas Gerais (Brazil) but became globally known due to a couple of environmental disasters that caused the death of almost 300 people. In the first studies we used Steinitz´s framework (2012), but some difficulties in the process were observed, what led to the proposal of a new platform and framework, more adapted to inequalities related to access and use of information, so that people could really act as participants of all the steps. The new web-platform is based on Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI), which receives a considerable amount of data and is open to receive further information via Web Map Service (WMS), which guarantees the users will construct, by themselves, judgments about these areas. It presents a shared process of decision making by digital dialogues, as by voting based on Delphi method. The platform and process are based on geovisualization, interoperability and the co-creation of ideas based on geo-collaboration.

This paper explores an innovative approach to open policymaking and citizen-responsive urban planning. It reports on project MiraMap carried out by the Politecnico di Torino (the Polytechnic University of Turin). The project engages both citizens and the Public Administration in a reporting process concerning critical issues, as well as positive trends and resources within the Mirafiori Sud administrative area of Turin (Italy), through the use of a digital collaborative platform. The experiment was a real case study geared at evaluating the use of open source technologies to foster e-participation in urban planning. MiraMap has been set up with an eye to achieving integration within the current administrative management process and to involving new actors in the decision-making process through a “collective governance” approach. Therefore, this paper seeks to set up a methodological (and technological) framework, which is seen as crucial for addressing the complexity and dynamics of urban planning and programming, by integrating the perspectives of citizens through their actual engagement.
