Food security is becoming an increasingly relevant topic in the Global North, especially in urban areas. Because such areas do not always have good access to nutritionally adequate food, the question of how to supply them is an urgent priority in order to maintain a healthy population. Urban and peri-urban agriculture, as sources of local fresh food, could play an important role. Whereas some scholars do not differentiate between peri-urban and urban agriculture, seeing them as a single entity, our hypothesis is that they are distinct, and that this has important consequences for food security and other issues. This has knock-on effects for food system planning and has not yet been appropriately analysed. The objectives of this study are to provide a systematic understanding of urban and peri-urban agriculture in the Global North, showing their similarities and differences, and to analyse their impact on urban food security. To this end, an extensive literature review was conducted, resulting in the identification and comparison of their spatial, ecological and socio-economic characteristics. The findings are discussed in terms of their impact on food security in relation to the four levels of the food system: food production, processing, distribution and consumption. The results show that urban and peri-urban agriculture in the Global North indeed differ in most of their characteristics and consequently also in their ability to meet the food needs of urban inhabitants. While urban agriculture still meets food needs mainly at the household level, peri-urban agriculture can provide larger quantities and has broader distribution pathways, giving it a separate status in terms of food security. Nevertheless, both possess (unused) potential, making them valuable for urban food planning, and both face similar threats regarding urbanisation pressures, necessitating adequate planning measures.

RésuméCet article décrit les projets d'aménagement des franges urbaines qui ont été présentés lors de la consultation internationale pour l'avenir de la métropole parisienne, en [2008][2009]. Ces propositions avaient notamment pour ambition de réformer les divers types de franges grâce à l'établissement de nouvelles morphologies physiques et sociales à dimension durable. Après un rappel des diverses typologies de franges urbaines dans la ville diffuse européenne, l'article présente les projets des équipes ainsi que la définition de la durabilité qui les sous-tend. AbstractThis article describes land use projects proposed as part of the 2008-2009 international consultation on development for the Parisian metropolis. Those proposals were intended to identify sustainable planning projects that could revitalize different types of urban fringes by addressing both structural and social factors characterizing them. After a brief description of the different fringe types particular to dispersed cities, the article describes team projects pertaining to urban fringes and the concept of sustainability underlying them.

Authors in the last decade have noted that urban planners have been slow to address food‐related issues in cities (Clancy 2004; Howe 2002; Pothukuchi 2004; Pothukuchi and Kaufman 1999, 2000). Pothukuchi and Kaufman (1999, 2000) argue that despite the persistent belief that food is the domain of the rural, many facets of the food system are, in fact, urban issues, including private food enterprise, food consumption, food waste, retailing, food sector employment, diet‐related health problems and food‐related transit.…”

Just Urban Food Systems: A New Direction for Food Access and Urban Social Justice

Food geography has exploded as a subfield of human geography in recent years; however, normative ideas of justice are not always explicitly addressed. The concept of a ‘just urban food system’ can incorporate ideals of justice into the issue of declining retail food accessibility for low‐income urban communities –‘food deserts’– which have yet to be analysed through a lens of justice. In this article, I review geographers’ and planners’ research on changing urban food landscapes; I also discuss ways that food scholars have implicitly and explicitly addressed normative frameworks, such as food justice, food democracy, food sovereignty and the moral economy. I conclude with three potential research agendas to encourage research on the just urban food system: collective consumption, urban public/private property struggles and the just city.
