Planktonic Crustacean Assemblages in a System of Three Reservoirs in the Mexican Central Plateau: Seasonal and Spatial Patterns

Abstract: Planktonic crustacean assemblages were examined monthly for one year in a system of three reservoirs in the Mexican Central Plateau (Rio Grande de Morelia)-Lorna Caliente, Umecuaro and Cointzio. Temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity, transparency, nitrites, nitrates, total phosphorus, iron, hardness, turbidity, and suspended solids were quantified. Fourteen species of planktonic crustaceans were observed, including four copepods and ten cladocerans; major phytoplankton taxa were Chlorophyceae, Bacill… Show more

“…This dam was built in 1940 to supply water for domestic consumption as well as for industrial and agricultural activities. The Cointzio reservoir (6 km 2 ; 65×10 6 m 3 ) undergoes significant sedimentation, which leads to an increase in water turbidity in the lake inducing a drastic decline in the zooplankton population disturbing the entire trophic chain (Ramirez-Olvera et al, 2004) and to a 20% loss of its water storage capacity (Susperregui et al, 2009). Increasing siltation of this reservoir is a major concern in the Morelia region where it supplies a significant part of distributed water.…”

“…2002). The crustacean assemblages and phytoplankton composition were also studied, being found to be highly affected by environmental deterioration along the Rio Grande River (Ramirez‐Olvera et al . 2004).…”

“…2004). A high concentration of mineralogical suspended particulate matter (SPM), associated with increased turbidity, could result in drastic population declines of small zooplankton (Ramirez‐Olvera et al . 2004).…”
