“…IPO is a basin‐scale temperature pattern in the tropical Pacific (Power et al, ; Zhang et al, ). It strongly influences the ITF transport from the Western Pacific toward the shelf of northwest Australia on decadal scales (Feng et al, ; Wainwright et al, ), and consequently, the intensity of the ITF impacts the water exchange between shelf and coast (Armbrecht et al, ; McKinnon et al, ). In this study, the IPO‐like pattern (PC2) explained 20.6% of the total variance in the phytoplankton records (Figure (c)).…”

“…A Shimadzu TOC-V carbon analyzer fitted with solid sample combustion (SSM-5000A) and total nitrogen units was used to measure POC/PON content; filters were acidified precombustion to remove inorganic carbonates. A hot acid digestion in 5% persulfate was performed on filters for PP analysis (Menzel and Corwin 1965), and the resulting concentration of liberated phosphate was determined spectrophotometrically (Parsons et al 1984) with a Shimadzu UV-1601.…”

“…Coastal density fronts can influence the distribution and ecology of planktonic organisms, and are especially strong during the wet season when turbid, low-density plumes are associated with river discharge (Grimes and Finucane, 1991;Kingsford and Suthers, 1994;Thorrold and McKinnon, 1995;Grimes and Kingsford, 1996;McKinnon et al 2015). However, during this study off the Kimberley in 2010, atypically low rainfall during the austral summer monsoon (Australian Bureau of Meteorology, 2012) presumably played a role in the presence of weaker frontal conditions than would have been expected for the April-May period.…”

“…Previous studies of larval fishes along adjacent parts of northern Australia have only yielded 48 (McKinnon et al, 2015), 68 (Young et al, 1986) and 79 teleost families (Sampey et al, 2004).…”
