Planktic Foraminiferal Assemblages in Surface Sediments From the Subpolar North Atlantic Ocean

Abstract: The subpolar North Atlantic (SPNA) Ocean has complex hydrography, and moderates the global climate through the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). The surface water mass dynamics in SPNA and the upper limb of AMOC, govern the plankton distribution. Specifically, the habitat of modern planktic foraminifera is strongly affected by the SPNA hydrography. In the present study, 25 surface sediment samples from the Labrador Sea to the Iceland-Faroe-Shetland Channel (IFSC) were examined for planktic fo… Show more

“…72 Other foraminifer species that have been identified in the sub-Arctic waters in the west to the warm North Atlantic water in the east are Neogloboqudrina pachyderma, Neogloboquadrina incompata and Globorotalia inflata, Globigerina bulloides, Globigerinita glutinata, Globorotalia scitula, and Globigerinita uvula. 73 These species present morphologies highly similar to the biomorphs (Figures 3, 4). Biomorphs are autoorganized systems whose structures with different biological morphologies are not formed by cells but by nanocrystals.…”

“…Among foraminifers are those of the species Turborotalita quinqueloba located in the subpolar North Atlantic, in the Nordic seas, and in the Arctic Ocean . “…The concentration of T. quinqueloba, a subpolar water mass indicator at Site 984 [4] and northeastern subpolar gyre [59], seems to loosely covary with the % N. pachyderma, although the relative concentration of the former is insignificant. In any case, the trace of G. inflata, N. incompta, and T. quinqueloba [60][61][62] further support the presence of a prevailing cold climate regardless of the season during MIS 6. Using mostly N. pachyderma and other foraminiferal concentrations at ODP Site 984, Mokeddem and McManus [4] reported three interstadial events centered at 163, 152, and 146 ka within MIS 6 in which only the interstadial event centered at 152 ka exhibits a minor T. quinqueloba rise.…”

“…We combined the ForCenS planktonic foraminifera assemblages sampled in Atlantic Ocean core-top surface sediment samples (Siccha and Kucěra, 2017) with 54 additional samples for the NE Atlantic coastal upwelling systems (Salgueiro et al, 2008;Voelker and Salgueiro, 2017;Salgueiro et al, 2020, represented in the figure as Salgueiro) and 40 samples from the North Atlantic's subpolar gyre (Barrenechea Angeles et al, 2020;Sahoo et al, 2022). This resulted in a total of 1741 samples (Figure 1), which were collected between the 1960's and 2016.…”
