Planetary sleep medicine: Studying sleep at the individual, population, and planetary level

Abstract: Circadian rhythms are a series of endogenous autonomous oscillators that are generated by the molecular circadian clock which coordinates and synchronizes internal time with the external environment in a 24-h daily cycle (that can also be shorter or longer than 24 h). Besides daily rhythms, there exist as well other biological rhythms that have different time scales, including seasonal and annual rhythms. Circadian and other biological rhythms deeply permeate human life, at any level, spanning from the molecul… Show more

“…Rising temperatures have been associated with shorter sleep duration and poorer sleep quality, as has the aftermath of weather phenomena impacted by climate change like hurricanes, oods, and wild res. 9,10,11,12 Multiple dimensions of sleep health, including insu cient sleep duration, irregular sleep schedules, and poor sleep quality, can increase cardiometabolic risk predisposing to CVD. 13 For instance, poor sleep has been linked to higher risk for hypertension, 14,15 obesity, 16 and type 2 diabetes 17 via theorized mechanisms including in ammation 18,19 , glycemic dysregulation, 20 increased sympathetic tone via increases in nocturnal catecholamines.…”

“…Chronic SP are linked to increased risks of obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, anxiety, depression, and impaired cognition. As a global issue that greatly impacts public health, SP warrants ongoing research and clinical attention ( 2 ). Accurately diagnosing specific sleep disorders via biomarkers could enable better-targeted, personalized medicine interventions and treatments.…”
