ERG wavelets elicited by monochromatic single stimuli (100 msec duration) were recorded from light and dark adapted human eyes. The bandwidth of the AC amplifier system was 145–1,300 Hz. The amplitudes of the were measured by a new method based on experiments with an electronic analogue. The method reduces the influence of the lower ERG frequencies on the amplitudes of the wavelets. Relative spectral sensitivity values were obtained by the method of constant response. These values approximate either the CIE photopic luminosity function when the wavelets measured were recorded from light-adapted eyes or the CIE scotopic luminosity function when the wavelets measured were recorded from dark-adapted eyes. The time interval between the start of the stimulus and the peak of the wavelets was measured too. In light adaptation, this interval is shorter at longer wavelengths. The relation is opposite in dark adaptation. It is concluded that both scotopic and photopic systems can produce wavelets independently of each other, and which set of wavelets is seen depends on the state of adaptation of the eye.
