Planar Chromatography

Abstract: This review covers the literature of thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) found by computer-assisted searching in Chemical Abstracts and the ISI Web of Science from November 1, 2005 to November 1, 2007. The literature search was augmented by consulting Analytical Abstracts, and the following journals that regularly publish papers on TLC were searched directly: Journal of Chromatography (parts A and B and the bibliography issues),

“…Theories, techniques, and applications of planar chromatography have been reported in the literature (Sherma 2002(Sherma , 2004(Sherma , 2006(Sherma , 2008. Traditionally, this technique is based on capillary filling phenomenon to drive a mobile phase through a porous material, such as paper, silica gel, alumina, or cellulose, which serves as stationary phase.…”

“…Three bioautographic techniques have been described for the investigation of antimicrobial activity [6][7][8]: agar diffusion, direct bioautographic detection on the TLC plate, agar-overlay. The influence of various parameters in these tests has been evaluated [9].…”

“…HPTLC is also ideally suited for the preliminary screening of plant extracts before HPLC analysis. A recent review gives an in-depth summary of TLC and HPTLC [15] and the subject is amply treated elsewhere in this Special Issue.…”
