Plain cigarette packs do not exert Pavlovian to instrumental transfer of control over tobacco‐seeking

Abstract: AimsTo gain insight into the potential impact of plain tobacco packaging policy, two experiments were undertaken to test whether ‘prototype’ plain compared with branded UK cigarette pack stimuli would differentially elicit instrumental tobacco-seeking in a nominal Pavlovian to instrumental transfer (PIT) procedure.Design, Setting and ParticipantsTwo experiments were undertaken at the University of Bristol UK, with a convenience sample of adult smokers (experiment 1, n = 23, experiment 2, n = 121).MeasurementIn… Show more

“…These data combine to suggest that NAc core dopamine signaling is an important substrate for allows cues to motivate behavior, but only when this is adaptive. Because this motivational influence can be disrupted in the addicted state in both non-human, drug-exposure models (LeBlanc et al 2013, Leblanc et al 2013, Wyvell & Berridge 2001, Taylor & Jentsch 2001, Glasner et al 2005, Ostlund et al 2014) and in human addicts (Garbusow et al 2014, Martinovic et al 2014, Hogarth et al 2014), these results have implications for the understanding and treatment of addiction and other disorders of behavioral control.…”

“…Standardised packaging may reduce smoking in current smokers by making the packs less appealing,108 109 by producing less craving and motivation to seek tobacco110 111and by increasing attention to health warnings 112 113. Since the introduction of standardised packaging in Australia, evidence among adult smokers suggests that plain packaging has achieved its specific objectives and reduced the appeal of tobacco products, increased the effectiveness of health warnings, helped reduce the extent to which smokers are misled about the harms of smoking114 115 and reduced the ability of the pack to appeal to young people 116.…”

“…Also, plain tobacco packs displaying progressively fewer branding design elements are perceived to be increasingly unfavourable by adult smokers33 and result in an increase in strong cognitive, emotional, motivational, and avoidance reactions 34–37. In experimental auctions, bids from adult smokers are lowest for plain unbranded packs with prominent visual warnings 38 39. In a naturalistic field study, young adult UK smokers used plain packs for 2 weeks and regular packs for 2 weeks 40.…”
