Plagiarism: Words and Ideas

Abstract: Plagiarism is a crime against academy. It deceives readers, hurts plagiarized authors, and gets the plagiarist undeserved benefits. However, even though these arguments do show that copying other people's intellectual contribution is wrong, they do not apply to the copying of words. Copying a few sentences that contain no original idea (e.g. in the introduction) is of marginal importance compared to stealing the ideas of others. The two must be clearly distinguished, and the 'plagiarism' label should not be us… Show more

“…Depth of a term t refers to the frequency of the term in a class (unlike normal term frequency which considers the number of the term's occurrences in the whole document). Thus, Spread and Depth can be combined to find the weight w of a structural component c in a generic class Gc, which can be expressed as follows: (1) where spread(t) is the number of components that has t, tf t,Gc is the frequency of t in the generic class Gc which has t, and maxtf Gc is the maximum frequency occurs in that class.…”

“…Such contributions of others are considered their ideas and should be acknowledged when reported in a further research. Plagiarism from scientific publications, hence, takes two forms: words and ideas, based on the plagiarised content [1]. Words plagiarism is the form of using some sentences or phrases found in other papers which contain some general knowledge but do not contain original ideas of others.…”

“…While some researchers argue that the background nature of literature reviews precludes original thought and thereby the stealing of ideas (Bouville 2008), a claim can be made that the purpose of the literature review is to make an intellectual argument that contextualizes the current research within previous work. That said, differentiating between ideas and words in a text match is not a clear-cut procedure.…”

“…This brought engineering into the news in a very negative light and resulted in one student losing his master's degree (Linder 2007) and others being required to rewrite their theses. When incidents such as this are publicized, little is usually said about how much material was copied and whether the copying represented the stealing of words or ideas or both (Bouville 2008). An instance of copying, regardless of degree and context, appears to equal a finding of plagiarism in many cases.…”

“…Understanding all the stakeholders, as well as the legal and ethical implications of transfers, can help facilitate decisions that are in the best interest of everyone involved. 5 Legal precedent (Stanford v. Roche, 2011; CGR 2011a), grant provisions (NIH 2010a; State of California 2014), and institutional policies often stipulate that the financial award for most grants is the property of the institution to which the grant is awarded. However, transfer or retention of funds is only one aspect of the equation.…”
