Places of prosumption: Community gardens putting the ‘we’ into neighbourhoods

Abstract: Prosumption encompasses acts of production and consumption, and studies on it have mostly taken a commercial focus, centred on the dominant individualistic narrative of ‘I’. This article seeks to extend debate regarding prosumption by exploring its possibilities for creating a new set of ‘we’ identities based around nature and community. “…Prosumption has been described as a post-consumption phenomenon associated with finding alternative ways of producing and consuming, consuming less (Carrington et al, 2016), and reimagining different kinds of relations between human and more-than-human beings (Arnould, 2022;Chatzidakis et al, 2014;Scaraboto, 2022). “…The role of urban gardens in social cohesion is also noticeable by the evidence that collective urban gardens experiences promote inter-personal interaction, facilitate integration of newcomers and help raising the sense of community and neighbourhood (Shaw et al 2016;Sotelo 2017). They also appear to help linking economic and other dimensions of sustainability by providing households and communities the opportunity to value food variety and food safety along with the cost and effort of producing food in an environmentally-sound way…”
