Placental Protein 5 (Pp5) in Complicated Pregnancies

Abstract: Summary Maternal serum PP5 concentrations were assayed in pregnancies complicated by intrauterine growth retardation, pre‐eclampsia, diabetes mellitus, placental abruption and twins. Elevated PP5 levels were noted in twin pregnancies and to a lesser extent in diabetes and pre‐eclampsia. Measurement of PP5 was of no value in the detection of fetal growth retardation. The great majority of PP5 levels above the normal range were associated with a placental abnormality.

“…In twin pregnancy, serum levels of PP5 were elevated as reported pre viously [Nisbet et al, 1981b;Salem et al, 1982]. This finding can be attrib uted to the enlarged placental mass.…”

“…Salem et al [198 Id] stated that PP5 levels were often elevated prior to placental abrup tion; that is, increased PP5 concentration may be an early sign of coagula tion abnormalities at the placental site. Significantly elevated PP5 concen trations were noted in women with pre-eclampsia and maternal diabetes [Nisbet et al, 1981b;Salem et al, 198Id, 1982]. Although the number of women surveyed in this study was small, PP5 concentrations in pregnant diabetic women were within the normal range.…”

“…generate a series even of this size in most fully The levels of PP5 show an elevation comparable developed countries. Furthermore, six of the to that previously reported in pre-eclampsia seven patients were multiparous which again is (Salem et al 1982;Nisbet et al 1981). “…The initial observations on CRF levels in pregnancy-induced hypertension indicate that levels rise, which is like placental protein 5 (PPS) (Nisbet et al 1981) and pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A) (Lin et al 1977) but unlike other placental proteins which are unchanged or decreased (Salem et al 1983;Spellacy et al 1971). It is not certain whether the rise in CRF is primary or secondary to the pregnancy-induced hypertension but CRF is a peripheral vasodilator (Fisher et al 1983) and consequently the rise may be a compensatory response to pregnancy-induced hypertension.…”
