Placental growth factor in the first trimester: relationship with maternal factors and placental Doppler studies

Abstract: PlGF (40.7 (range,.1) pg/mL; Mann-Whitney P = 0.034.). A trend to lower levels was also observed when umbilical artery end-diastolic flow was absent (37.1 (range, 6.8-95) vs. 49.3 (range, 1.01-176.1)

“…Differences in SAP were also present between gd0 and gd5, with Pgf À/À dams having higher SAP than B6. A similar finding that PGF levels inversely correlate with maternal blood pressure was reported in a prospective study of 110 women in first trimester [27]. Both the mouse and human data attribute significance to the small elevations in plasma PGF that occur very early in pregnancy.…”

“…The sensitivity and specificity of first trimester UtAPI in predicting of PE in eight studies was 25.4% and 93.3% respectively and for IUGR 15.4% and 93.3% respectively [28]. Consequent to these studies, it is plausible that the addition of maternal serum biomarkers of placental development may further improve prediction either by increasing sensitivity or by lowering the false positive rate.…”

“…Kasdaglis et al proved that many maternal variables such as race, smoking or caffeine intake were not found to have a relationship with PlGF levels [31]. Levine et al found that the balance of angiogenic factors plays an important role in invasion of extravillous trophoblast into the decidual spiral arteries and transforming them into uteroplacental vessels and therefore a relationship with placental Doppler parameters is expected.…”

“…Women presenting with a singleton intrauterine pregnancy between 11 and 14 weeks' gestation were offered participation. After obtaining written informed consent, a standardized questionnaire regarding general health and prepregnancy measures, maternal physical examination, ultrasound examination, and blood sampling were performed as previously described [12]. For this subanalysis, we included women who had prenatal care and subsequent GDM screening at the study centers.…”
