Placenta Previa: An Analysis of Three Years Experience

Abstract: A retrospective study of 45 cases of complete placenta previa is presented. Expectant management of the premature infant using tocolytics, blood transfusion, and cesarean section was practiced. All patients were suspected of having placenta previa based upon ultrasound examination; 90% reported third-trimester bleeding; 48% required prepartum blood transfusion; and 80% experienced one or more complications. Premature delivery occurred in 67% of patients; tocolysis was initiated in 53%. Patients with previa wer… Show more

“…However, they were unable to examine differences among Asian women by country of origin because of the small numbers involved. On the contrary, the relationship between maternal race and placenta previa has not been demonstrated by other studies (7), (9–11), (15), (16). Furthermore, a reverse relationship was observed by two other studies where the crude odds ratio (OR) for placenta previa was lower in minority or other races compared with white race (17), (18).…”

“…Although infrequent, placenta previa is a leading cause of third trimester bleeding and results in considerable maternal and fetal mortality and morbidity (1, 2). Previous studies have identified several risk factors for placenta previa, including advancing maternal age, higher parity, maternal smoking before and during pregnancy, a history of induced or spontaneous abortion, previous cesarean delivery, and male sex at birth (3–11). Studies on the relationship between race and placenta previa have been inconsistent.…”

“…This resulted in considerable savings in neonatal hospital costs. Sauer et al 6 reviewed 45 cases of complete placenta previa. Tocolysis was used in 23 cases without untoward maternal effects.…”
