Place reference systems

Abstract: Reference to places is a central but largely underexposed problem of information science. Place has been a major object of research in many domains including Geography, Cognitive Science and Geographic Information Science. However, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have been built solely on space reference systems creating a gap between human conceptualization and machine representation. While reference to space only partially captures reference to place, most existing definitions of place either reduce the… Show more

“…With respect to similar approaches of describing place which are driven by the essential kinds of place inference (Tuan, 1977), such as the work of Scheider and Janowicz (2014), the proposed approach is comparatively more objective, since it does not depend solely on an individual's capabilities or judgment. Instead, it relies on widely accepted definitions of places and functions that resemble Alexander's property of echo (Vasardani, Tomko, & Winter, 2016).…”

“…Different ontologies are studying the way of formal representation of geographical objects (Ballatore, 2016;Frank, 2001;Kuhn, 2003;Scheider& Janowicz, 2014;Scheider, Janowicz, & Kuhn, 2009;Smith & Mark, 2001). Ontologies such as DOLCE and WordNet apply cognitive and linguistic perspective focusing on the semantics of natural language terms and the ways of structuring human understandings of space.…”
