“…At the same time, demographic changes and a decrease of agricultural economic significance took place (Bryden and Hart, 2004;Johansson, 2015). Against this backdrop, various academic concepts were developed to prevent decline and improve rural economies, ranging from 'neo-endogenous development' to 'place branding' (CCRCD, 2007;Domínguez García et al, 2013;OECD, 2006;Ray, 1998). Commonalities among these strategies include the facilitation of cross-sectoral and multi-level cooperation, the use of regional core assets as well as a place-based approach for development.…”

“…The literature shows that this kind of place branding has to take into account various competing narratives of the identity and qualities of the place (Anholt, 2010;Bianchini & Ghilardi, 2007;Hjortegaard Hansen, 2010;Klanicka et al, 2006). We focus here on branding as a process where an 'inner' storyline or narrative is constructed, reflecting people's stories and perceived images of place, distinguished from the 'outer' storyline or narrative, communicated as a brand to the outside world (Domínguez García, Horlings, Swagemakers, & Simón Fernández, 2013;Horlings, 2012).…”

“…Downstream from Frieira, the river runs freely through small canyons with a granitic bed. The estuary itself is characterized by a sandy bed where the sediments present a certain homogeneity (medium to very fine sands), with low concentrations of heavy metals and metalloids [4,8,18,19].…”

“…It is considered a low-impacted estuary (low human intervention), often selected as a reference in ecotoxicological studies, and also as an example for the implementation of water directives in other rivers, due to its water quality [9]. The estuary presents a large diversity of habitats, with several threatened, economically and ecologically valuable species, and an important productivity, key for the nursery and feeding of marine species and ecosystem functioning [8,9]. For these reasons, the Minho estuary is protected by Portuguese and Spanish conservation statutes [10], and is included in the LTER (Long-Term Ecosystem Research) Portugal and LTER Europe programmes [15,20] and in the Natura 2000 Network [21,22].…”
