Place-Based Ecosystem Management: Adapting Integrated Ecosystem Assessment Processes for Developing Scientifically and Socially Relevant Indicator Portfolios

Abstract: Developing a comprehensive portfolio of theoretically sound indicators is fundamental to effective place-based management of coastal ecosystems at a wide range of scales. We reviewed indicator development case studies from seven different social-ecological systems over the first 10 years of the NOAA integrated ecosystem assessment (IEA) program, with the goals of identifying effective strategies and highlighting general principles that would inform future efforts. The IEA framework provided a versatile approac… Show more

“…Any process for selecting and prioritizing indicators is most likely to meet the needs of stakeholders if it is conducted on a regionally or case-specific basis [73]. These processes will be further ameliorated by the participatory identification of new indicators developed in collaboration with the people most affected by HABs.…”

“…Below we briefly introduce social-ecological resilience and human wellbeing as possible ELRPs that would need additional research before eventual implementation. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Integrated Ecosystem Assessment approach is increasingly used to support developing socially relevant indicators that measure human well-being (Szymkowiak and Kasperski 2021;Williams et al 2021) and build resilience in ecosystems and communities (Spooner et al 2021).…”

“…The inclusion of human-wellbeing as the desired impact of ocean governance reflects the fuller definition of the EBM, which includes the human dimension. The enhanced framework recognizes the emerging concepts of sociological ecosystems and integrated ecological assessments and indicators (Link and Browman, 2017;Dunford et al, 2018;Spooner et al, 2021;Williams et al, 2021).…”
