Background: Pityriasis rotunda is a rare cutaneous disorder characterized by scaly, circular, well-demarcated, hypo-or hyperpigmented, fine plaques over the trunk and extremities.Objective: We present a case of pityriasis rotunda in a 44-year-old African-Canadian woman who presented to a community dermatology practice in Toronto.Results: Pityriasis rotunda has been well described in Japan, Italy, and South Africa. It is extremely rare in North America, with nine reported cases to date, the majority of which were diagnosed in the United States.Conclusion: Pityriasis rotunda is a rare cutaneous disorder associated with systemic disease. To the best of our knowledge, this is the second report of pityriasis rotunda diagnosed in Canada.Contexte: Le pityriasis rotunda est une affection cutané e rare, qui se caracté rise par de fines plaques circulaires, bien circonscrites, squameuses, hypo-ou hyperpigmenté e, qui couvrent le tronc et les membres.Objectif: Il sera question, dans l'article, du cas d'une Afro-canadienne de 44 ans, atteinte de pityriasis rotunda, qui consulté en dermatologie communautaire, à Toronto.Ré sultats: Le pityriasis rotunda est bien connu au Japon, en Italie, et en Afrique du Sud. Il est rarissime en Amé rique du Nord; seuls neuf cas ont é té signalé s jusqu'à maintenant, et la majorité d'entre eux se trouve aux É tats-Unis.Conclusions: Le pityriasis rotunda est une affection cutané e rare, associé e à une maladie gé né rale. À notre connaissance, il s'agit du deuxiè me cas de pityriasis rotunda diagnostiqué au Canada.

ÖzetPitriyazis rotunda (PR), gövde ve ekstremitelerde yuvarlak-oval yamalarla karakterize nadir bir deri hastal›¤›d›r. ‹nce skuaml› bu yamalar genellikle çevredeki deriden daha aç›k renkli, bazen de daha koyu renktedir. Beyaz ›rkta oldukça nadir olan klinik tablo Japonlar, Güney Afrika ve Bat› Hindistan zencilerinde daha s›k gözlenmektedir. Akdeniz bölgesinde yo¤un olarak Sardunya adas›ndan olgular bildirilmifl olmakla birlikte Avrupa'da çok nadir görülmektedir. Burada ülkemizden tan› alan ilk iki olgu sunulmaktad›r. On befl yafl›nda k›z ve 4 yafl›nda erkek çocukta gövdenin tamam› ile ekstremitelerin proksimal k›s›mlar›n-da iyi s›n›rl›, dairesel, pitriyazik skuaml› merkezi hipopigmente, periferi eritematöz plaklar mevcuttu. Hastalar›n deri foto tipi II idi. Histopatolojik incelemede granüler tabaka izlenmedi sadece orta derecede kompakt hiperkeratoz mevcuttu. Yaln›z emolient kullan›lan hastalarda lezyonlarda tam silinme sa¤land›. The patches are usually lighter than the surrounding skin, but sometimes may be darker, and are covered by fine, adherent scales. It is very rare in caucasoids, common in Japanese and is also seen in South African blacks and West Indian black and Mediterrean area predominantly in Sardinia have been reported but it is seldom observed in Europe. We present the first two cases diagnosed from Turkey. There were well-demarcated circumscribed scaly plaques with a erythematous periphery and hypopigmented center on the trunk and proximal parts of upper limbs. Their skin phototype was III. Histopathologic examination revealed a moderate degree of compact hyperkeratosis without a granular layer. Complete clearing was observed with only emollients. (Turkderm 2010; 44: 99-101)
