Pituitary function in human pseudocyesis

Abstract: Two young women with clinically established pseudocyesis were studied by endometrial biopsy, basal hormonal serum levels and dynamic pituitary testing. Basal serum levels of PRL and TSH were in the normal range; estradiol - 17 beta, progesterone and FSH were in the follicular phase range, but LH was in the follicular phase range in one patient and in the climateric range in the other one. The histologic assessment of the endometrial biopsies disclosed a proliferative endometrium in both patients. A group of si… Show more

“…Elevated prolactin levels lead to galactorrhea or lactation, the persistence of corpus luteum, and suppression of Follicle-stimulating hormone and LH secretion, ultimately resulting in amenorrhea ( 13 , 14 , 25 , 29 , 35 , 36 , 38 ). Corpus luteum is an initial source of circulating progesterone during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and pseudopregnancy ( 25 , 39 ). Other neuroendocrinologic disturbances (e.g., decrease in LH and an excessive prolactin response to thyrotropin-releasing hormone stimulation, abnormality in growth hormone, Adrenocorticotropic hormone and cortisol levels were seen in pseudocyesis cases ( 15 , 24 ).…”

“…The underlying mechanism of such a psychosomatic reaction may be an extemporaneous activation of neuroendocrine 'maternal subroutine' characteristics of pregnancy (8). Abnormality in neurotransmitter pathways resulting in alterations of pituitary secretion has also been considered aetiological (9). These reported inconsistencies in the endocrine profile may also be due to the study on a small sample of cases of 'true' pseudocyesis.…”

“…gonadotropins have been reported to be low, normal or high (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6). Similarly, basal serum PRL levels have been found elevated or within normal limits (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6). However, an exaggerated PRL re¬ sponse to TRH appears to be a common finding in patients with pseudocyesis (1)(2)(3)(4).…”
