“…According to the result of some in vitro studies, addition of E 2 inhibited spontaneous secretion of FSH in sheep, pig and cow pituitary cell cultures. The reason for the decrease in FSH secretion, due to the E 2 treatment, had been linked to the suppression of the expression of the gene encoding activin B (Nett et al, 2002). A parallel decrease in concentrations of mRNA for FSH-b subunit and activin-bB was reported.…”

“…However, the observed decrease in expression of the activin-bB gene after treatment with E 2 was less than that for FSH-b. Therefore, it was concluded that a relatively smaller reduction in activin concentrations may be sufficient to inactivate the second messenger cascade and thereby greatly reduce FSH synthesis and secretion (Nett et al, 2002). E 2 treatment has no effect on rabbit pituitary cell FSH secretion, whereas it stimulated spontaneous secretion of FSH in rat pituitary cell cultures (Miller and Wu, 1981).…”

“…This has been demonstrated in several species using both in vivo and in vitro models (Lindzey et al 2006, Arreguin-Arevalo et al 2007. Groups using ovine pituitary cells in culture have clearly demonstrated that treatment with E 2 attenuates FSH secretion and intracellular synthesis (Miller et al 1977, Huang & Miller 1980, Nett et al 2002. In particular, E 2 suppresses these parameters by decreasing FSHb expression (Miller & Miller 1996, Baratta et al 2001.…”

“…This effect is thought to be mediated through the activin/inhibin/follistatin system (DePaolo, 1997;Nett et al, 2002;Welt et al, 2002;McNeilly et al, 2003). Activins are produced by a wide variety of tissues including the pituitary gland, and are specifically by gonadotropes (Roberts et al, 1989).…”
