This article discusses perspectives for making global sociology, which implies open and fruitful cooperation between sociologists from different locations, as well as enhancing our discipline’s positions in the field of social sciences and in extra-academic environments. Drawing on Wacquant’s ideas, we understand neoliberalism as a globally dominant approach to social regulation, combining market-oriented mechanisms in economic transactions and restrictive control apparatus based on the cultural imperative of individual responsibility, supported by the state. Intellectually rooted in European liberal tradition and supported by neoclassical economics’ conceptual frameworks, neoliberalism has shaped three interrelated challenges for global sociology: (1) Eurocentric conceptual apparatus within the discipline, (2) domination of economics over sociology in the field of social sciences, and (3) marketisation of the academic world, promoting direct ‘profitability’, and making ‘public value’ of scientific knowledge less relevant. We argue that these three challenges generate a tendency towards negative ideological unity across a significant number of sociological communities worldwide, which tend to see neoliberalism as a multifaceted common enemy. Despite being evidence-based, this emerging global ideological unity in sociology is problematic because it lacks a strong positive project. Instead of hostile attitudes towards internal and external agents affiliated with neoliberalism, the solidarity-oriented strategies may be helpful in building a truly global sociology.

No presente artigo, Michael Burawoy critica o Programa Forte na Sociologia Profi ssional (PFSP) -o projeto duma ciência pura e aplicada ao conhecimento da sociedade. No lugar, ele propõe sua sociologia pública, a qual consiste no engajamento dos sociólogos com diversos públicos fora do mundo acadêmico, visando ao fortalecimento da sociedade civil. Conforme o autor, ciência social sem valores é impossível. Portanto, a questão não é livrar a sociologia dos valores, mas é saber quais valores fazem sentido no presente contexto. Aqui Michael Burawoy insere seu esquema das três ondas do capitalismo. Segundo ele, estamos hoje na terceira onda da mercantilização, na qual Estados e mercados estão em aliança contra os direitos trabalhistas e sociais conquistados contra o avanço do capitalismo no passado. Isso requer novas abordagens da sociologia (a sociologia da terceira onda) -a qual se defi ne por assumir o ponto-de-vista da sociedade civil e a defesa dos direitos humanos. The Islamic perspective on social work: A conceptual framework

For social workers in the Muslim world, authentization of social work implied the integration of Islamic religious knowledge with current practice theories. But the latter, still clinging to a 19th-century positivist/empiricist epistemology, hampered the inclusion of religious concepts in professional practice. In time, however, certain theoretical breakthroughs (Sorokin's integralism, Maslow's transpersonal psychology, the Islamization of knowledge movement, and the spirituality in social work movement) helped overcome that barrier. This article describes the formative development of the conceptual framework of the Islamic perspective on social work, benefiting from insights gleaned from these revolutionary theoretical advances. This article then suggests systematic procedures to guide both social work research and practice based on that framework.
