Pitfalls and major issues in the histologic diagnosis of peripheral T‐cell lymphomas: results of the central review of 573 cases from the T‐Cell Project, an international, cooperative study

Abstract: Peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCLs) comprise a heterogeneous group of neoplasms that are derived from post-thymic lymphoid cells at different stages of differentiation with different morphological patterns, phenotypes and clinical presentations. PTCLs are highly diverse, reflecting the diverse cells from which they can originate and are currently sub-classified using World Health Organization (WHO) 2008 criteria. In 2006 the International T-Cell Lymphoma Project launched the T-Cell Project, building on the ret… Show more

“…Peripheral T cell lymphoma was diagnosed based on the World Health Organization classification system along with clinical and laboratory information. Some cases are difficult to diagnose correctly 25 . In this regard, the judge sentenced that the patient being younger and without nodal involvement or any typical laboratory result, it was difficult to diagnose peripheral T cell lymphoma.…”

“…In Europe and North America ENKTCL accounts for less than 1% of all Non-Hodgkin Lymphomas (NHL), whereas in Asian countries and Latin American countries it is more frequent representing 2 to 15% of NHL [3][4][5][6]. A recent study from the T cell lymphoma project, an international cooperative study, demonstrated NK cell malignant lymphoproliferations accounted for 2 to 5.1% of all T and NK cell lymphomas in North America, 1 to 4.3% in Europeans, and higher rates in Asian populations of 22.4 to 22.5% [37]. Aozasa et al estimated that the frequency of ENKTCL is 10-fold higher in Asian populations when compared to Europeans [38].…”

“…Table 5 lists lymphoma subtypes by the degree of difficulty in their classification. [81][82][83][84][85][86][87][88][89][90] Multiple studies show that secondary reviews in pathology increase the diagnostic accuracy. The EP recommends that institutions incorporate their own peer review processes into their quality assurance programs.…”
