Yaw and roll damping measurements of a flapping-wing aircraft during hover are taken with a load cell. Yaw damping is also estimated by analyzing the vibration of the suspended flapping-wing aircraft. The damping values obtained using the two methods increase with the increase of angular frequencies of yaw and rolling motions. They are also calculated using quasi-steady analysis. Furthermore, yaw damping is also estimated using the equation proposed by Hedrick et al. for flying animals. When the angular frequencies of yawing and rolling motions are smaller than 10% of the frequency of flapping motion, the theoretical values from the quasi-steady analysis and the equation of Hedrick et al. agree well with the experimental values.

Fatigue monitoring can effectively reduce or even avoid traffic accidents. Head posture estimation is one of the focuses in the field of fatigue monitoring. In this paper, according to the coordinate rotation transformation and neural network theory, a method for predicting the change of head posture with sight-line coordinates is proposed. First, the coordinate rotation transformation theory is used to replace the head posture change amount with the coordinate change amount, and the first-order difference value of the sight-line point coordinate is obtained by the difference method. Then, under the unified Cartesian coordinate system, the MP-MTM-LSTM neural network is established with the input information of first-order difference value and the output information of coordinate change amount. The innovation of this method is that the Cartesian coordinate change is employed instead of the Euler angle transformation. In the model verification phase, the true value of the head pose is collected by the posture meter. The experimental results show that the absolute error between the predicted value and the true value estimated by the new method is less than 15%. In the field of fatigue monitoring, the proposed method can estimate the amount of head posture change effectively, which is suitable for the case where the head center point is not fixed.

Biomimetic air vehicles (BAV) are a class of unmanned aircraft that mimic the flapping wing kinematics of flying organisms (e.g. birds, bats, and insects). Research into BAV has rapidly expanded over the last 30 years. In this paper, we present a comprehensive bibliometric review of engineering and biology journal articles that were published on this subject between 1984 and 2014. These articles are organized into five topical categories: aerodynamics, guidance and control, mechanisms, structures and materials, and system design. All of the articles are compartmented into one of these categories based on their primary focus. Several aspects of these articles are examined: publication year, number of citations, journal, authoring organization and country, non-academic funding sources, and the flying organism focused upon for bio-mimicry. This review provides useful information on the state of the art of BAV research and insight on potential future directions. Our intention is that this will serve as a resource for those already engaged in BAV research and enable insight that promotes further research interest.
