Between the fifteenth and the mid-seventeenth century, Renaissance humanism influenced the legal ideas of educated strata in the Kingdom of Poland, including educated burghers. The article examines this process mainly on the example of towns in the Ruthenian lands of the Polish Crown. The result of this influence was several relatively new ideas reflected in legal treatises of this time, written mainly by lawyers from the townspeople, and in other sources: about the clarity and comprehensibility of law for ordinary people, the need to use the vernacular in legal texts, the unconditional supremacy of law, etc. The acquaintance of the townspeople with legal literature contributed to the spread of these ideas.

Trzeba jednak pamiętać, że niekiedy rajcy zbierali się w prywatnych domach, mimo że w mieście był ratusz 21 .…”

RATUSZ W MAŁYCH MIASTACH POLSKICH W XV-XVI WIEKUŹródła skarbowe, których początki sięgają przełomu XV i XVI w., dzieliły miasta Królestwa Polskiego na cztery grupy. Obok najwięk-szych, civitates maiores, wyróżniono miasta średnie, civitates et oppida secundi ordinis (tzw. II kategoria podatkowa), oraz miasta mniejsze, tertii ordinis, mające targi i jarmarki (III kategoria). Czwartą kategorię tworzyły miasta, w których targi się nie odbywały, non habentes fora (według ustawy dotyczącej pogłównego z 1520 r.), czyli "miasteczka przez targów będące" (ustawa z 1590 r.) 1. W ostatnich dwóch grupach podatkowych znalazły się ośrodki liczące od 300-400 do 1000 mieszkańców, utrzymujących się w przeważającej mierze z pracy na roli. Uzasadniona jest zatem wątpliwość, czy można uznać tych ludzi za faktycznych przedstawicieli stanu i kultury mieszczańskiej, czy upoważnia nas do tego ich tryb życia, a także poziom kultury materialnej i umysłowej. Warto więc zapytać o obecność w małych miastach ratuszy, stanowiących bez wątpienia jeden z ważniejszych atrybutów kultury miejskiej, a w dalszej kolejności -o rolę, jaką odgrywały w życiu mieszkańców tych niewielkich ośrodków.Materiał źródłowy, którym dysponujemy przy tego rodzaju analizach, jest bardzo skromny. Niewiele informacji dostarczają dokumenty, księgi ziemskie czy kościelne. Nie zawsze pomocą mogą służyć lustracje, wprawdzie zachowały się w nich wzmianki o ratuszach, ale na ogół o dosyć lakonicznym charakterze. Szczególnie cenna jest zatem niewielka liczba ksiąg powstałych w małomiasteczkowych kancelariach. Wyjątkową 1 Z.
