The title compound, (C6H8N)2[CuCl4], is composed of two 3-methylpyridinium cation and one tetrachloridocuprate(II) anion. The geometry around the copper(II) ion is that of a distorted tetrahedron. In the crystal structure, the anions and cations are linked by three different N—H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds. In addition, the crystal structure exhibits aromatic π–π interactions between the pyridinium rings of two discrete units [centroid–centroid distance = 3.704 (2) Å].

A novel Cd(II) coordination polymer [Cd(C 4 H 11 N 2 )(l-Cl) 2 Cl] n ÁnH 2 O with a supramolecular structure has been synthesized by reaction of CdCl 2 2Á5H 2 O with piperazine. The compound was investigated by X-ray diffraction, electrochemistry, and IR spectroscopy. The CdCl 3 (C 4 H 11 N 2 )ÁH 2 O entity in the compound forms a 1D coordination polymer as a result of the bridging function of the chlorine atoms Cd-Cl 2 -Cd. Adjacent 1D coordination polymers are connected by (O,N,C)-H…Cl, (O,N)-H…Cl, and N-H…O hydrogen bonds, generating a three-dimensional supramolecular network. With this atomic arrangement, the complex can form an electroactive film on a platinum electrode by anodic oxidation in acetonitrile solution.

The asymmetric unit of the title salt, (C7H11N2)2[CuCl4], comprises half a tetrahedral tetrachloridocuprate anion, being located on a twofold axis, and a protonated 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine cation. The geometry around the CuII ion is highly distorted with the range of Cl—Cu—Cl angles being 94.94 (1)–141.03 (1)°. The crystal structure is stabilized by N—H⋯Cl and C—H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds. In the three-dimensional network, cations and anions pack in the lattice so as to generate chains of [CuCl4]2− anions separated by two orientations of cation layers, which are interlocked through π–π stacking contacts between pairs of pyridine rings, with centroid–centroid distances of 3.7874 (7) Å.
