Conventional methods for pipeline transportation of heavy or extraheavy crude oils adopt heating, water blending, and dilution, and several methods are generally required to be used simultaneously to ensure normal transportation. However, how to determine the optimal transport boundary conditions for heavy oils is still one of the technical challenges. In this paper, the circulating piping experiment at different water contents (0−90 wt % with an interval of 10 wt %) and temperatures (65−90 °C with an interval of 5 °C) of three heavy oils from the Xinjiang oilfield is carried out. The apparent viscosity calculated from the experimental data of the circulating pipeline shows that when the water content is below the phase inversion point, the apparent viscosity increases and when the water content is close to the phase inversion point, the apparent viscosity increases nearly three times. Only when the water content is greater than the phase inversion point, the apparent viscosity shows a downward trend. Also, then, various viscosity prediction models with different independent variables, which mainly included temperature, water content, and dilution ratio, are selected and verified. Based on experimental data of six crude oils, a prediction model of the phase inversion point is established. Simultaneously, a method for determining the boundary conditions of heavy oils using the combined methods of heating, water blending, and dilution is proposed, while a set of simple decision diagrams of boundary conditions for heavy oil is also described. Finally, verified by the heavy oil pipeline of the Bohai LvDa oilfield, the gathering and transportation limits determined by this method are consistent with the operating parameters of the oilfield.

The additive drag reduction technology has wide application and high economic value in drag reduction of oilfield water injection system. With CTAC/NaSal (cetyltrimethyl ammonium chloride/sodium salicylate) aqueous solution as the research object, this paper explores the effects of oilfield water component on its rheological characteristics under the experimental condition of 10–60°C, .1–1 000 s−1, and 0.01–0.21 wt %. The experimental results reveal that the oil cannot inhibit the formation of shear‐induced structure in the solution and strengthen the temperature resistance of the solution; NaHCO3 and CaCl2, two types of salts, have similar effects on rheological characteristics of the CTAC/NaSal solution. The solution viscosity increases first and then decreases with the increase of salt concentration. And the viscosity peak gradually moves to the left lower with the increase of temperature, which means that the salt tolerance of the solution decreases with the increase of temperature. Moreover, the Giesekus model has the best performance for describing the rheological characteristics of surfactant solutions. Within the experimental concentration range, the relative error is ±25%.

Foaming of oils often confronts researchers in food, cosmetics, and petrochemical industries. Destabilization or stabilization of nonaqueous foams is fundamentally crucial for process control and product quality. Antifoams can be a useful method to control excessive foams. Nonetheless, the foaming mechanisms and the selection criteria of the most common antifoam, poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) oils, are not thoroughly discussed. The study of inorganic colloidal particles as foam stabilizers has drawn particular attention over the past years practically and academically, yet only a small part of literature focuses on nonaqueous foams. For these reasons, we have studied the effects of PDMS oils and silica nanoparticles on the foaming of oils. We find that the performance of silicone oils as crude oil antifoams is firmly related to PDMS viscosity and crude oil composition presumably because the solubilization of PDMS oils in hydrocarbons reduces with increasing viscosity of the polymers and the hydrocarbons. The findings also illustrate that nanoparticle hydrophobicity and concentration are the primary factors for the foam stabilization effect.
