Pioglitazone Decreases Coronary Artery Inflammation in Impaired Glucose Tolerance and Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract: Our study indicated that pioglitazone attenuated left main trunk inflammation in patients with impaired glucose tolerance or DM in a glucose-lowering independent manner, suggesting that pioglitazone may protect against cardiac events in patients with impaired glucose tolerance or DM by suppressing coronary inflammation. (Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Pioglitazone; NCT00722631).

“…7,10,17 However, successful evaluation of coronary FDG uptake has been reported previously 18 and has recently focused on the left main coronary artery (LMCA) segment, which does not have an epicardial course and thus lends itself to measurement of FDG uptake. 19 …”

“…Preliminary studies evaluating 18 F-FDG PET/CT as a method for coronary plaque inflammation imaging have performed PET at 3 h after 18 F-FDG injection (12)(13)(14). On the other hand, studies evaluating the impact of dietary regimen on the quality of 18 F-FDG uptake suppression have performed PET at 1 h after 18 F-FDG injection (8,10).…”

“…As a result, there is an increasing interest toward evaluating molecular activity of the plaques. There are some reports on the capability of FDG-PET/ CT to visualize coronary artery atherosclerosis in diabetic patients 46 and atherosclerosis plaques before 96,97 and after stenting. 57 Despite the potential applicability of this technique, there are some concerns with its applications for visualizing the coronary arteries.…”
