Abstract: Pío del Río-Hortega (Portillo, 1882-Buenos Aires 1945) was a Spanish pioneer scientist. Here, we highlight his professional merits and scientific qualities, facets that permitted him to open the eyes of the scientific community to the existence of microglia and oligodendroglia.

“…Consequently, in the 1920s, he was one of the most relevant neuroscientists in the world and his figure attracted many outstanding disciples, as the American neuropathologist and neurosurgeon Wilder S. Penfield (Penfield, 1924(Penfield, , 1977del Río-Hortega and Penfield, 1927; see also de Castro, 1981de Castro, , 2019del Río-Hortega Bereciartu, 2020). Pío del Río-Hortega was proposed by first time for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1929 1 because of his "work on the histology and histopathology of the nervous system, especially studies of glial tissue (microglia and oligodendroglia)" (de Castro, 2019;del Río-Hortega Bereciartu, 2020). Escaping from the Spanish Civil War (1936)(1937)(1938)(1939) first, and the 2nd World War (1939)(1940)(1941)(1942)(1943)(1944)(1945) later, Río-Hortega continued researching out of Spain up to his death.…”

“…In this case, it was his grandnephew, Juan del Río‐Hortega Bereciartu who addressed this figure and his work. Indeed, most notable of Río‐Hortega's discoveries was the description of two of the three types of glia that exist in the brain, oligodendroglia and microglia, a finding that complied a hundred years last year (Río‐Hortega Bereciartu, ).…”
