“…In this procedure, besides widening the nail bed by our modified 5-flap z-plasty technique, the osteophytic bone tissue located on the dorsal surface of the distal phalanx is removed to provide a flat surface for the nail bed. As suggested by earlier colleagues 3,12,13 we also believe that rongeuring the osteophyte, which is a pathognomonic finding of PND, is an essential step in surgical correction of this deformity. By flattening the dorsal surface of the distal phalanx, and remarkably widening the distal part of the nail bed where the width index of the nail is particularly decreased, this new technique provides an efficient correction of PND.…”

“…The incidence of pincer nail was reported to be 0.9% in a randomized population. 3 The etiology of PND is unknown yet, which is attributed to several diseases and factors. Although great toes are frequently affected, this deformity can occur in all nails, including the fingernails.…”

“…The phenol was then neutralized by application of a 70% ethanol solution, as described by Plusjé in an article on treatment of pincer nails. 20 Specialists from the Prevention Service of the Centro Superior de Investigaciones Científicas and the Centro Nacional de Nuevas Tecnologías (CNNT) of Spain's National Institute of Safety and Hygiene in the Workplace made the measurements of the environmental concentrations of phenol. The measurements were made in the zones of respiration of the physician and the assistant.…”

“…1 The condition may be so painful that even contact with a bed sheet becomes unbearable. This results in impingement of the distal nail bed between the free lateral edges of the nail plate, leading to a narrow or obliterated nail bed, 2 which may cause mild to severe, intractable pain and discomfort, hindering normal walking or markedly decreasing the patient's quality of life. 3 The etiology of pincer nail is unknown.…”
