“…The resulting effect of SA infection creates a significant financial burden and detrimentally impacts public health system around the world . Approximately half a million people acquire staphylococcal infections in the United States per year, and the cost of SA healthcare‐associated infections was estimated to exceed 14 billion US dollars in 2003 . Hence, there is an urgent need for the development of drugs as an alternative to antibiotic therapeutics or of biologics to be used in adjuvant therapy.…”

“…The bacterium is one of the most common causes of hospital‐acquired infections, and contraction of the infection, frequently following surgery, is associated with a fivefold increased risk of in‐hospital death . A 2003 study highlighted the exorbitant economic burden incurred by S. aureus infections, estimating that S. aureus ‐related healthcare cost amounted to $14.5 billion for inpatient stays and $12.3 billion for surgical patient stays in the U.S. alone . Prophylactic measures against the bacteria is thus of urgent need, particularly as antibiotic therapeutics are faced with increasing antidrug resistance.…”
