Piloting an Automated Distress Management Program in an Oncology Practice

Abstract: Pre- and postprogram evaluations suggest that the program is feasible, safe, and effective for detecting and reducing distress in patients with cancer. In addition, tailoring psychosocial coping strategies to the patient's emotional situation may have been key to the program's effectiveness.

“…Schulze et al proposed a real-time production tracking system based on RFID, which fully embodies the concept of lean production [9]. Decker et al believe that hospitals must choose a more cost-effective drug management and storage mode, prepare drugs scientifically and reasonably, and improve drug management efficiency, so as to not only greatly reduce drug storage costs but also ensure the clinical use of drugs in our hospital, so as to effectively solve the problem of inventory management [10]. Romero and Rozano believed at the beginning of the project, it takes some time for the staff of the drug store to familiarize themselves with the scanning gun, the related application And during the acceptance process, sometimes the network speed is slow or the scanning gun malfunctions, so it is necessary to use traditional acceptance methods to accept drugs, which affects the acceptance rate [11].…”

“…For automated detection of distress in health, most of the studies focused on distress-related conditions such as depression, anxiety, PTSD and suicidal behaviour with very few studies (Pacula, Meltzer, Crystal, Srivastava, & Marx, 2014;Saleem et al, 2012) reporting results specifically on distress. One such study piloted an automated distress management system (Decker, Howard, Holdread, Decker, & Hamilton, 2016) in an outpatient medical oncology practice using a tablet or computer to tailor psychosocial coping recommendations or referrals for individuals after immediate analysis. The authors used the Distress Thermometer and problem checklist proposed by National Comprehensive Cancer Network as a screening tool.…”

“…Dr. Decker developed an automated mobile health technology application for management of patient distress in an outpatient oncology practice (Decker, Howard, Holdread, Decker, & Hamilton, 2016). If a patient reported depression, he/she might be prescribed an exercise program.…”

“…If spiritual concerns were reported, the patient would receive a referral to appropriate spiritual support. This tablet-computer-based program proved to be user-friendly and effective in a pilot study (Decker et al, 2016) and results of the study were disseminated at conferences such as the 16th World Congress of International Psycho-Oncology and Psychosocial Academy in Lisbon, Portugal and the 13th American Psychosocial Oncology Society Conference in San Diego, CA, where she received the Best Five Clinical Interventions award. Dr. Decker also has made presentations at the conferences of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association and the Doctors of Nursing Practice.…”
