Pilot-Plant Scale 12 kW Microwave Irradiation Reactor for Woody Biomass Pretreatment

Abstract: A simple, low reflection, and highly-efficient pilot-plant scale microwave irradiation reactor for woody biomass pretreatment was fabricated. Pretreatment is an essential process for effective bioethanol production. The fabricated reactor consists of 8 microwave irradiators which are attached to a metal pipe. The woody biomass mixture which contains water and organic acid flows through the metal pipe and is heated by microwaves at a total power of 12 kW. To design the microwave irradiators, we used a 3D Finite… Show more

“…Better uniformity in processing temperature of the reaction could result in lower dehydration of sugars to furans and hence increase sugar yields from the microwave-assisted reactions. Up-scaling studies of microwave-assisted biomass pretreatment reactions to pilot scales have been reported showing technology applicability to commercial process [36,37]. The acid-catalyzed fractionation reactions led to disruption of the highly ordered fibrous structure and degradation of the biomass surface as shown by microscopy.…”

“…The diameters of the reactors (metal pipes) are 75 mm and 80 mm for the 3.6 kW and 15 kW reactors, respectively. Figure 6 shows a photograph of the tower-type 12 kW microwave pretreatment reactor 50) . Unlike the previous two reactors, the slurry is poured from the top of the reactor and the products exit from the bottom.…”
