Pilot-based channel estimation for FBMC/OQAM systems under strong frequency selectivity

Abstract: Scattered pilot-aided channel estimation in offset QAM-based filter bank multicarrier (FBMC/OQAM) systems has so far been only considered for channels of mild frequency selectivity. In more demanding scenarios, the classical auxiliary pilot (AP) idea has been shown to result in severe error floors. In this paper, a novel pilot-aided channel estimation method is developed which for the first time extends the applicability of the AP idea to highly frequency selective channels. The development relies on a Taylor … Show more

“…Channel estimation (CE) methods of FBMC attract numerous researches, especially in multipath fading channels [10]. FBMC CE methods include preamble-based [11]- [13] and scattered pilotsbased techniques [11], [14], and [15] techniques. The former ones are supposed to cancel the undesired interference, like interference cancellation method (ICM) or effectively exploiting it to improve the estimation performance, like interference approximation method (IAM) [12].…”

“…In this section, we concisely present the state-of-the-art in channel estimation for MIMO-FBMC/OQAM. Scattered pilots-based techniques are of special interest in fast fading environments, where they allow tracking the channel variations throughout the frame (see, e.g., [110] and references therein). Since the MIMO designs presented in this paper are not suited to time-varying channels, this section only reviews preamble-based techniques.…”

“…Due to the OQAM modulation and the MIMO scenario, the pilot symbols may be impacted by ISI, ICI and interantenna interference. Many works in the literature have looked at this issue, see [32] for a general review or [33], [34] for more recent works on the challenges and solutions in pilotaided channel estimation for FBMC-OQAM systems.…”
