We examined relationships among perch population variable parameters in two types of lakes, lakes with perch (P-lakes, n=15) and lakes with perch and roach (PR-lakes, n=10) using redundancy analysis (RDA) to relate population variables to environmental factors. Effects from environmental factors were tested for significance by means of permutation tests (Monte Carlo). Three factors, pH, altitude and fraction of roach (by number) in the gill net catches, explaining 47.9% of the variation, had significant effects on perch population variables. The significance of pH was improved by partialing out the effect of conductivity and roach. Similarly, the significance of altitude was improved by partialing out the effect of pH and roach, and the significance of roach was improved by partialing out the effect of pH and altitude. When the fraction of pike in the catch was included in the analysis, the effect of roach was not significant and vice-versa, as roach and pike fractions were correlated with each other. The effect of pike was significant when roach was not included, but the effect was not as strong as the effect of roach. A biplot was constructed by plotting population variables on the first and second RDA axis, with arrows showing five selected environmental factors. Growth of 3+ to 5+ perch was positively related to pH and altitude, perch catch per unit effort was negatively related to pH and altitude, and age specific perch weight was negatively related to fraction of roach. The relationship between growth of 2+ perch and pH was not as strong as the relationship between pH and the growth of older perch. Moreover, the growth of 2+ perch was negatively related to the fraction of roach, probably due to competition between young zooplankton feeding perch and roach.

-The impact of fish and cyclopoid copepod predation on zooplankton communities was evaluated using large-volume mesocosms (depth 9.5 m; volume 13 m 3 ) in the Ř ı´mov reservoir (Czech Republic). Two yearling roach and perch individuals introduced into mesocosms represented the fish treatment, which was compared to cyclopoid copepods (initial abundance of 2 ind.L x1 ) and a control with no initial addition of predators. Our results clearly support the hypothesis that planktivorous fish feeding leads to the suppression of large-bodied cladocerans. In the presence of fish, the cladoceran community changed from a dominance of large-bodied Daphnia spp. at the beginning to dominance by the smaller Bosmina longirostris at the end of the experiment. Chlorophyll-a concentration and rotifer abundances increased in the absence of daphnids. In the absence of fish, the presence of large-bodied cladocerans resulted in decreasing chlorophyll-a concentration. Although no significant differences were observed between cyclopoid abundances in treatments stocked with cyclopoids and the control, the proportion of large cladocerans clearly showed the effect of the manipulation. The similar trends in both of these treatments did not confirm the importance of cyclopoid predation in our experiment. The overall strong effect of fish over cyclopoid predation suggests the main role of fish predation in the forming of zooplankton communities and in turn impacting phytoplankton biomass in mesocosms.

Eutrophication of lakes has increased the risk of fish kills during winter under ice cover. If such a lake is isolated, the fish assemblage consists of only oxygen-tolerant species without predatory species. Here, our main aim was to analyze the fate of 99 marked pike (Esox lucius) stocked to a pikeless lake that is known to have low oxygen concentrations under ice cover. These pike (total lengths 33.5À76.9 cm; weights 260À3050 g) were stocked in May 2008 and were followed 7 years. The first marked pike was caught in August 2008 and the last one in September 2012. Between these dates, 21 pike were caught at least once, five pike were caught twice, and two pike were caught three times. Relative condition was based on the lengthÀweight relationship. Both length and weight affected significantly the recapture probability, whereas relative condition had no effect. The growth of marked pike was estimated based on length or weight increments in two separate models with either starting length or weight together with the number of days between observations. In these models, the number of days had positive, and size, either length or weight, had a negative relationship with growth. According to marginal r 2 , length and the number of days explained 65.5% of variation in length increments, whereas the marginal r 2 for weight and the number of days was 49.3% for weight increments. The length increment model was used to compare pike growth in Lake Savij€ arvi with other Finnish lakes. The comparison showed that during the first four growing seasons after stocking, the pike growth in Lake Savij€ arvi was faster than in the other lakes studied.
