PIK3CA and TFRC Located in 3q Are New Prognostic Factors in Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Abstract: PIK3CA and TFRC mRNA represent prognostic factors in patients with ESCC. TFRC mRNA offers an independent prognostic factor, and expression may have clinically important implications.

“…Transferrin receptor has been described as an independent prognostic factor based on mRNA expression analysis in ESCC. 42 In the current study, TFRC and TF were 4.3-and 14.9-fold upregulated in the ESCC secretome.…”

“…In PIK3CA mRNA, it has been reported that PIK3CA mRNA expression correlated with the pN status in ESCC (43). However, in this study, expression levels of mRNA were investigated only with qualitative analysis using formalin-fixed samples (43).…”

“…In our study, we failed to detect the correlation between the PIK3CA mRNA status and pN status. On the other hand, a recent study highlighted a significant correlation between the PIK3CA mRNA and pN status (43). The lack of association between PIK3CA mRNA and protein could be due to transcriptional or posttranscriptional mechanisms which finely control the expression level of its protein.…”

“…ECT2, coding for a transforming protein that is related to Rho-specific exchange factors, plays a role in epithelial cell polarity (Liu et al, 2006a). Finally, PIK3CA encodes the p110a catalytic subunit of the class IA phosphatidylinositol 3-kinases (PI3Ks), which is involved in tumor cell proliferation as well as in invasion and metastasis (Samuels and Ericson, 2006), the PIK3CA mRNA levels correlate with worse prognosis in patients with ESCC (Wada et al, 2006).…”
