“…The review of the English language literature yields 30 well-documented cases of pigmented odontogenic tumors (Table 1): 18 were calcifying odontogenic cysts, three were adenomatoid odontogenic tumors, three were ameloblastic fibro-odontomas, two were odontomas, one was an odonto-ameloblastoma, one was an ameloblastic fibroma, one was an odontogenic fibroma, and one was an unclassified tumor (calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor by author's suspicion). Only 12 cases of pigmented odontogenic cysts have been documented: eight were odontogenic keratocysts [4,5,19,31], and there was one gingival cyst [12], one botryoid odontogenic cyst [3], one lateral periodontal cyst [6], and one dentigerous cyst [41]. Melanocytes and/or melanin pigment in these reported odontogenic lesions were microscopically observed and macroscopically showed no pigmentation, except for two cases [25,41] with macroscopically visible mild pigmentation.…”

“…Including the present report, only 24 cases 10,13,14,18,28,31,34,35,[39][40][41]44 mentioned follow-up of the lesions, and none reported recurrence; the specifically defined follow-up period, provided in only 19 cases, 10,13,18,28,31,34,40,41 including the present report, ranged from 1 month to 3 years, with the average time being 1.2 years. Only the present case and Holder and Kunkel 10 reported radiographic follow-up, with both reports indicating almost complete resolution of the associated hard tissue defects.…”

“…Our review of the literature identified 155 reported cases of gingival cysts (Table 1). 5–48 The outward appearance of a GCA was typically an oval to round, firm, elevated swelling located on the attached gingiva and/or the alveolar mucosa. Most were ∼5 mm in diameter, but some lesions were >1 cm.…”
