Piezoelectricity and Pyroelectricity of Polymers

Abstract: This article surveys theoretical and experimental work on piezo- and pyroelectricity of polymers in the 1970's with special emphasis on the origins of these properties. The origins are classified into three types: (A) internal strain (§2), (B) strain- and temperature-dependences of spontaneous polarization (§3), and (C) elastic and/or dielectric heterogeneity of a system with embedded charges (§4). The origin of piezo- and pyroelectricity of poly(vinylidene fluoride) is discussed as a typical example of electr… Show more

“…[15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23] Ferroelectric Form I (β phase), with an all-trans configuration in P(VDF-TrFE), exhibits the best ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties. A sandwich device prepared using solidstate P(VDF-TrFE) films exhibited both direct and inverse piezoelectric effects.…”

“…4 For this purpose, changes in the free volume of the crystalline and amorphous parts with pressure are the most important quantities that had to be evaluated. Furthermore, according to the composite model theory, 5 P-V-Tequations of state for the two parts and the pressure dependence of their dielectric properties should be closely related to piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties under high pressure.…”
