Piezoelectric properties of 〈001〉 textured Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3–PbTiO3 ceramics

Abstract: The piezoelectric properties of (1−x) Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3–xPbTiO3 (x=0.3–0.35), ceramics with a high degree of 〈001〉 fiber texture were investigated for possible actuator applications. Piezoelectric coefficients (d33) in excess of 1200 pC/N associated with strain levels up to >0.3% were observed in samples prepared by a reactive templated grain growth process. No excess PbO was used in the starting composition. A high degree of fiber texture was achieved using 〈001〉 oriented BaTiO3 template particles in a … Show more

“…These values are higher than those previously reported for other Pb-free and Pb-containing piezo-ceramics and are comparable to those of Pb-containing relaxor-based single crystals. 1,27,[39][40][41][42][43][44][45] A comparison of the e-E curves along h001i PC (solid line) and h101i PC (dashed line) (at 130 C and 120 C, respectively) is given in Figure 2(d). Three steps are identified in this figure that has notably different slops in the e-E curves with increasing E along both directions.…”

“…Similar <112> and <001> grain-oriented PMN-PT ceramics, at x = 0.30 and 0.32, respectively. The first one was prepared with a directional solidification method of the compressed powders prepared by the columbite method (Sun et al, 2004), and the second ceramic was produced with the templated grain growth method (Sabolsky et al, 2001). The latter method, responsible for synthesizing PMN-PT ceramics with good-quality texture, is a processing routine that uses a tabular (001)-oriented SrTiO 3 as a template (Kwon et al, 2005), at which the volume fraction of the oriented material increases as the thermal treatment continues at the expense of the finer grain matrix (Kwon et al, 2005).…”

“…However, the methods of obtaining the large enough single crystals for such application are very expensive and complicated. Thus, the strongly oriented or textured ceramics made in the low-cost production are a very good alternative [3][4][5][6][7][8].…”
