Piezo-effect and physics of CdS-based thin-film photovoltaics

Abstract: We report a strong reversible piezo-effect in CdTe∕CdS photovoltaics consistent with the piezo parameters of CdS. Our finding suggests a different understanding of CdS-based solar cells including CdTe- and CuIn(Ga)Se-based devices. Because the CdS film is put into compression in the device, the piezo coupling generates surface charges and the electric field opposing that of the absorber layer. The corresponding potential barrier makes CdS insulating and the device operate in a metal-insulator-semiconductor mod… Show more

“…Moreover, CdS is one of the most common window layer used in different photovoltaic cell structures. Recently, a strong reversible piezo-effect in CdTe/CdS photovoltaic consistent with the piezo parameters of CdS was reported by Shvydka et al [21]. The results induced understanding of the concept of piezo-photovoltaics and suggested specific practical implications.…”

“…Piezoelectric effects around GBs could directly affect the doping and transport properties in these materials. 55 In particular, x-ray microdiffraction experiments are currently in progress in order to correlate such experimental results with direct measurements of the stress tensor around GBs.…”

“…As an example, its photocatalytic behavior can be employed for hydrogen generation, 10 its chemoresistivity allows fabrication of conductometric gas sensors, 11 and its chemiluminescence can serve to the realization of photoelectrochemical reporter units in analysis of biological processes like tyrosinase. 12 Other than its appreciated chemical-physical properties, CdS also impacts other research fields: CdS-based films show also piezoelectric effects, 13 photoconductivity, 14 electroluminescence, 15 which lead to employments as piezoelectric transducer, photoresistor, solar cell, 16 and more. Scope of the present paper is to highlight its photo-enhanced properties that modify the chemical activity at surface.…”
